It depends. It's not dependent on systems changing but a person's mental health and personality.
If you struggled talking to people 10 years ago and didn't do anything to change that, you'll struggle now too.
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

I stopped dining out when I would get tip minimums from friends who would say if you don't tip X amount then don't eat out. So I stopped. Wonder if other modest means people did. Back in the day I used to tip 15% if the service was pretty good and 20% if it was awesome. 10% meant they did the bare minimum and 5% mean you actively sucked and 0% would mean the evening was just ruined or something. Its hard to give that one a bar as like only a few times has it been warranted. Like the server would have to be straight up rude or insulting or something. Anyway since that did not seem good enough I just stopped. If I see a tip jar at a place I nope out. Now granted prices are so high now I don't even go to fast food so I sorta don't do anything now.
No, not really. But it was way easier to talk to people 20 years ago.
thats an interesting question.
Not really, but that may be because in the meantime I aged into what is considered the most trustable demographic; the middle aged lady. People talk to me now. Confide in me, even.
God I hate people being rude to service workers, that is to me the sign of a true asshole. Someone who thinks they are worth more than someone else. I don't see it much though.
Yes, but only marginally. The recent past is overrated as hell due to the present being so absolutely god awful.
I think we were all easier to talk to 20 years ago
Yes
No. I think people are more fearful now thanks to too much news. The world changes very slowly.
We change far faster.
I chat with strangers all the time. Airport, work, grocery store, wherever. I have never had anyone do anything more than have a very short conversation signaling that they weren't interested. Polite but clear, so I don't persist.
Nobody has ever said anything rude to me or been shitty.
Humans are social animals, even those self-proclaimed introverts. Everyone need social time, even if it is only with a small group for a short duration. Most people enjoy it, don't believe the bs that society at large is crumbling and people are mean.
Fwiw, am a guy, short, not horrible looking but not special. I am good at making stupid jokes for most any situation. That seems to put people at ease.
