Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Do you want small painful splinters of glass piercing into your skin? Cause this is how you get small painful splinters of glass piercing into your skin.

Well that and making sweet love to raw carbon fiber…

If you haven't made passionate love to insulation you haven't lived

The warmest glory hole

Suddenly socks and slippers makes sense now

I knew a guy who lost a foot after getting a fibreglass splinter in it which caused an infection. And he wasn't even working with fibreglass, one of his neighbours was, he was just picking up his mail while wearing only socks.

Moral of the story: don't fuck around with fibreglass.

How did an infection from a small wound lead to an infection serious enough to require amputation? Maybe I'm being naive but I can only imagine you have to ignore it quite badly for that to happen...

[–] Overspark@piefed.social 15 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Rare flesh eating bacteria. There was even talk of chopping off his whole leg at some point and there were multiple operations to get it all out. In the end he was quite happy to only lose his foot.

[–] LastYearsIrritant@sopuli.xyz 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Sure, but that has nothing to do with the insulation. Any wound could have caused that.

It's like saying "don't go to the movies cause my cousin got pregnant after going on a date!"

[–] Overspark@piefed.social 14 points 3 days ago

The underlying problem was that the fibers had entered his body and were mobile, so almost impossible to remove, even in multiple operations. Any secondary problems they caused, such as those bacteria, kept getting worse.

So no, the fibers themselves were definitely a large part of the problem.

Fun fact: the bacteria isn't rare, it's actually quite common. You'll almost certainly get some in any cut you get!

What's rare is the infection not being fought off naturally. Were I a betting man (I am) I'd say the bacteria had formed the same kind of colony that makes surgical implants such risk factors around the fiberglass.

Tl;Dr because of how phagocytes work (completely engulfing the pathogen) anything that gives a bacteria colony a hard surface to grow on makes it much, much harder for your immune system to eradicate.

Oh right that makes sense yikes

I love the fact we don't have a better alternative material to insulate houses with in the US. I guess it's marginally better than asbestos at least.

120F in attic and of course we have to snake cable 3 stories up and 3 down, or some other shit.. fiberglass insulation and nails inches above head. Sweating pores open every square inch of body. Not playing Civ. Itching for days. Fond Summer memories. Miss you dad.

[–] GalacticSushi@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I just had to replace the motor in my attic fan. I dropped the socket wrench and the head I was using fell off and got swallowed up into the fiberglass insulation. I'll never see it again.

[–] blazeknave@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Hahahahah I'm tearing up lol right now. That's the exact type of shit man... And now no socket wrench and a forever hole every time you open the set and I'm sure it's a common size bc ofc it is.

Don't lowball me, I know what I've got

[–] fubarx@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

As with most things, you just have to nail the one appreciative customer.

[–] ToastedRavioli@midwest.social 3 points 3 days ago

Unless you work in prostitution or crucifixion, its usually ill advised to nail your customers
