My guess:

All testcases are passing, all verifications say everthing is ported correctly, only problem is that nothing works.

They will need to spend a year manually debugging before they can release something in alpha quality .

From reading the blog post, I'm guessing you're right. They now have to understand what the AI did and clean up after it. But they will do so with more AI. It's doubtful there will anybody who actually understands the codebase.

Sounds like a terrifying place to work.

It's highly likely they have huge salaries to go along with it. There are worse ways to spend your time.

Maybe, but you'd be surprised how many shitty, low paying shops exist out there that pull stupid shit.

A few of my graduates went to one locally where they did not have a single version control system setup. Granted this was about 10 years ago but 2016 was still in an era where they should have known better.

You had a fuckton of newbies and non-coders who schmoozed into positions basically live editing prod.

I have an “innovation award” trophy from my last job sitting on my office bookshelf.

The alleged innovation was rolling out git to track the DB schema backing mission-critical operations, in the year 2021.

(It was a government job btw.)

I recently had to use TortoiseSVN. It doesn't handle merge conflicts well

[-] BeigeAgenda@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 months ago

Before git, you created the branch folders when starting SVN projects, and then never used them, because no one knew how to branch and merge and the ones who tried it had PTSD.

[-] Zarobi@aussie.zone 4 points 2 months ago

Can confirm; have PTSD

It can't be quite that bad; they've been shipping the rust version of Bun with Claude Code since v2.1.181 (released June 18th), and I haven't seen an outcry over all related functionality breaking

[-] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 13 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Why is the article talking so much about the lack of new release tag if the rewrite is already being shipped?

[-] fruitcantfly@programming.dev 14 points 2 months ago

The author probably didn't know. I believe that the 1.4 build is only available via the bun self-updater as a "canary" release. It hasn't been officially released yet

[-] locuester@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 months ago

Because the author was writing something about which they already made up their mind. It’s not an investigative piece, it’s a circle jerk.

P.S. Anthropic’s C compiler and Cursor’s FastRender web browser haven’t had any commits for months.

That's a interesting catch. Did the agents lose interest? Definitely a speedup on the abandonment pipeline.

Currently weeks into trying to patch up all the many holes in an AI rewrite of an app we were told would only take hours, which is still at approximately prototype quality.
