Don't buy those knife sets though. Cheap crap. A good paring knife, a nice big knife like a Chinese cleaver or a German or French style chef's knife, and a bread knife, will work for pretty much anything.

In addition to the other reply, I have a set of wüstof classics that I love (and have had for 20+ years). A couple of shun as well which have been great.
A note about the Henkels, make sure to get the ones that have 2 people on the logo (Zwilling like they said) not the one with 1 person. 2 is quality made in Germany. 1 is "internationally" made and of much lower quality.
Hm, it's hard to go wrong the Zwilling Henkel knives. Good price for the value, imo.
My partner prefers a santoku, branded Culinary Institute of America. It's thinner and better for veggies than the basic chef knife.
