Sounds like the business owner has entered the "find out" stage.

Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from consequences.

[–] systemglitch@lemmy.world 13 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

We dont have freedom of speech, but rather freedom of expression. Important distinction.

freedom of expression. Important distinction.

True, but it still does mean free from consequences.

They should lose their citizenships too. Can’t see why they’d object ¯_(ツ)_/¯

FAFO, bucko.

He said he disagreed with the public health measures put in place by Ottawa to curb the virus, including mask mandates.

“It really affected me personally because I have anxiety issues and not seeing faces really affected me,” he said.

Oh my fucking god, dude. None of us loved doing that. I'm sure the people with long covid are feeling pretty affected now, and the people who died might also have some opinions for you if they were still able to do things like have opinions.

“Even if we don’t separate, I mean, we ought to talk about this stuff, you know? People don’t want to talk about it.”

Yeah, you're almost getting it. We want to talk and think about it so little you lost your business over it. Not that you're learning any lessons from that.

He claimed Alberta should also leave Canada largely because Ottawa has mismanaged Canada’s food system. He said not enough food is grown domestically and it’s highly processed.

“I just can’t even touch commercial chicken anymore. It’s just disgusts me,” he said.

If I gambled I think that would be a pretty safe bet.

So get a farm and grow your own. Oh I get it l, too much work eh?

We love seeing good things happen to horrible people. Not enough of that these days.

This is actually quite similar to what happened to a local Ottawa business a few years ago https://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/stella-lunas-wellington-location-closes-its-doors

TL;DR they supported the trucker convoy and then people stopped going to their two locations. They also got a newly-opened business in the same building kicked out. Both times they complained about the finding out part of FAFO. Eventually they closed two locations because they couldn't make money.

It was actually the best thing, because now the city's best ice cream shop is in that location and has long lines every night. I just hope the convoy supporters would close their remaining location...

Canadians have been fighting off American imperialism since 1776

[–] Jarix@lemmy.world 7 points 2 hours ago

Still too many american sympathizers around in my opinion

An Alberta café owner (John Ewanek) says his business has shuttered after he hosted separatists and lost customers.

Deserved

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 13 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

I highly doubt this is because of hosting separatists, otherwise his business ran out of money insanely fast.

More likely is he’s been struggling for a while and now has a scapegoat (“I’m not a crappy business owner who ran it into the ground, it was the federalists!”).

[–] dermanus@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 hour ago

What's interesting is that cafe has been there since 1999. There's clearly a market. He bought it two years ago and turned it into this.

[–] waitingtech@lemmy.world 5 points 7 hours ago

You "highly doubt"? Man, that's some messed up thought patterns. If they closed a coffee shop in Cold Lake (pop 16K - seven coffee shops remain) because of mismanagement this timing is exactly right - mismanage to till you run out of credit then cut your losses and bail. Stick the blame on anyone but yourself and your piss-poor management. He said the coffee shop's decline started with COVID when he joined a traitor-sect. Hmmm, who is the baddie in this recounting: COVID, traitors (let's call them what they are), or lousy management of the two.

Ya makes yer bed an ya lies innit.

Oh, and mismanagement IS doing stupid, trendy, selfish things like hosting traitors in hopes of grifting money off their cult. His mismanagement was not accounting for the inherent cheapness of his target demographic.

Also unsurprising, he was not a fan of mask mandates. Shocked, I tell you.

[–] FreeBooteR69@lemmy.ca 18 points 11 hours ago

Awesome, fuck that guy.

[–] Ariselas@piefed.ca 12 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Nice!

But I'm sure he'll start a go fund me and grift off other idiots "defending free speech"

[–] Confused_Emus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Is that even technically a thing in Canada, from a legal perspective? Genuine curiosity - I’m not familiar with how those kind of laws are written in Canada.

[–] Ariselas@piefed.ca 8 points 7 hours ago

Oh yeah. We had some nutjobs who were millions in debt turn their ostrich farm into a cash cow after the birds tested positive for bird flu, RFK Jr. even got involved. Then there's Tamara Lich, Jeff Rath and the like.

But to top them all, there's this mediocre halfwit, former UofT psych Proff, and junkie who wrote a shitty self help book, who made a sizable fortune by being anti-woke and claiming that he was being censored (no one was censoring him) because he got bent out of shape for being asked to respect people's pronouns.

[–] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 7 points 8 hours ago

Sounds like Stella Luna in Ottawa. Suck on it moron.

[–] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 10 points 10 hours ago

Maybe they should just move south instead.

[–] lookitsjustin@lemmy.ca 9 points 10 hours ago

I mean, distance yourself and your business from the communities you exist to serve and this is bound to happen.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 8 points 10 hours ago
