On Tuesday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded to statements by White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, who asserted that Mexico’s political, judicial, and legal systems don’t work because cartels “control the territory.”

Sheinbaum avoided direct confrontation and urged the United States to “look at itself” regarding drug use, distribution, and money laundering related to drug trafficking.
The Mexican president emphasized that her government answers only to the will of the people and works every day for security and peace in the country. “In Mexico, the people govern, no one else does,” she affirmed.
Sheinbaum attributed part of the U.S. political discourse to the electoral context, noting that U.S. elections will be held in November. Miller had compared Mexico to organizations like ISIS and Al Qaeda, considered terrorist groups by Washington.

The U.S. official also asserted that these organizations not only introduce narcotics into the U.S., but also seek to “destabilize” its democracy and the rule of law.
In response, Sheinbaum reiterated that Mexico and the United States maintain security cooperation mechanisms, although each country operates within its respective jurisdictions.
The president insisted that the bilateral strategy must be based on respect for the sovereignty of both countries, stressing that Mexico should not be used as a defining element in U.S. election campaigns.
