That's a weird coincidence - I literally read that exact passage to my kids a few days ago!

The listener replies by saying it should have said 'Thou shalt not make a machine to counterfeit a human mind' which I think is doubly relevant these days.

[-] Rhaedas@fedia.io 20 points 2 months ago

Counterfeit is just covering one of the many uses of an AGI by those who control them. It still leaves open the other ways they were used against people in the Dune universe, so their absolutism of "no thinking machines, period" is right for what happened to them.

[-] Apepollo11@lemmy.world 17 points 2 months ago

I meant these days, not in the Dune universe. Stuff like people passing AI-generated stuff as human-generated, and businesses replacing workers with AI.

Neural networks have existed for decades, but it's only in the last few years have companies started replacing people with the technology en masse.

That's because the ability to barf out language that sounds reasonably like a person might have written it is relatively new. It makes it easier to fool the non-technical and the idiots that it's actually AI in the sci-fi sense. Makes for really good marketing to fools with your money.

I feel like AI enthusiasts would become a bit disillusioned with AI if they could see what was being added to their prompts.

It’s called a system prompt. It’s a wrapper around the prompt you, the user, writes, which is called the user prompt.

What exactly is being added to the system prompt is a huge part of the “secret sauce” of the AI providers, because it greatly affects the quality and tone of the output. It may also be part of the safety layer of guardrails to stop users from asking about topics the AI providers have deemed taboo (such as biology, in recent news).

[-] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 16 points 2 months ago

we stopped access to an entire topic incase it spilled the beans on how to make bioweapons.

Living in the future has been fun. VR was pretty sweet. Ordering pizzas by tapping a rectangle was awesome. I want to get off now though. I want to go home.

[-] xtools@programming.dev 6 points 2 months ago

the sauce is not so secret, people actively try to leak them: https://github.com/elder-plinius/CL4R1T4S

The Frank Herbert story that really fucks with me is Destination: Void

Dune touched on it and D:V smashes it in your face.

The last sentence in the book is fucking EPIC

[-] some_designer_dude@lemmy.world 24 points 2 months ago

Woah, spoiler alert. Now I know there’s an epic last sentence that I won’t be able to take my mind off of until I finally get to it and it’s definitely nothing like my brain had hyped it up to be.

[-] thisbenzingring@lemmy.today 11 points 2 months ago

its one of the few rare moments in a book where the last page absolutly is the reveal

hahaha good luck! maybe put it on your list and forget about it for a few months

[-] binarytobis@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago

maybe put it on your list and forget about it for a few months

That’s my specialty!

[-] Klear@piefed.world 4 points 2 months ago

That goes straight to my pile. While the Dune series isn't exactly my cup of tea (and gets progressively worse imo), I absolutely love The Santaroga Barrier.

Butlerian Jihadist, on standby.

This will be more like the men of iron. Discussed far more than warranted, given the ease of their destruction.

[-] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 months ago

Unfortunately I am not as familiar with the specifics of that lore, but I will take your word for it.

Yes it is. And don't call me Shirley.

[-] umbraroze@slrpnk.net 12 points 2 months ago

Dude's not gonna like the response.

But that's okay, the dude's not gonna like the response, whether it was made by an AI or human - for it is in Twitter where our scene lies.

All the good stuff is lifted directly from Asimov.

[-] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 2 months ago

And Asimov got his stuff from Clarke.

Paul, a trainee in a social class who rulers conscribe to do their thinking for them:

[-] iuseasahibtw@ani.social 6 points 2 months ago

X is filled with biomechanical AI bots

[-] Kolanaki@pawb.social 6 points 2 months ago

They just switched from AI to Mentats.

From machines that think like men, to men that think like machines.

[-] FluidBeef@quokk.au 3 points 2 months ago

Yeah, it’s all hydraulic despotism in Dune. Computing power at the time he wrote the first one was all mainframes that took up a whole room too.
