Just blocked lemmy.ml from my Lemmy account, and I swear to god it's one of the best things I've ever done on this platform. My homepage feels actually clean now.

For the past few months I'd been seeing a lot of tankie posting and pretty much far-left propaganda on my feed. It got tiring enough that I finally checked my blocked-user list, and realized pretty much everyone I'd blocked was from lemmy.ml. So I just blocked the whole instance instead.

Saying this as someone who considers themselves a leftist: I used to think Lemmy itself was an echo chamber. Turns out lemmy.ml was the problem the entire time. Probably the reason I tolerated it for so long is that I agreed with a lot of what they posted, but like an oversaturated meme, I'd had enough. Browsing the platform was starting to feel way too tiring instead of fun, which defeats the point of being here in the first place.

The breaking point was seeing some dude post a "meme" implying North Korea and China are basically communist utopias and that the West sucks. I mean, the West does suck, but come on - you're saying North Korea is the ideal the West should strive for? What the hell...

Having mindless tankies parrot ccp and russian propaganda is getting tiring.

[–] richardisaguy@lemmy.world 24 points 1 week ago (4 children)

No! It isn't propaganda! You're the one who is parroting propaganda!

Saying russia and china are dictatorships and stuff, i saw a post on VK that said exactly the contrary! And it must be true!

Xi Jinping said he cares about free speech, he can't lie, only western politicians lie!

Don't be surprised if you find hexbear giving you similar twitches.

[–] Cricket@lemmy.zip 37 points 1 week ago

Their instance was already defederated from hexbear, so they never saw posts from there.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 24 points 1 week ago

No no no. Twitch is owned by amazon. It's not part of the fediverse.

i'm new to my instance that isn't defederated from anything and I see an awful lot of whining about .ml hexbear and lemmygrad but i haven't seen the users do anything. i'm more annoyed by the whiners so far.

[–] helios@social.ggbox.fr 20 points 1 week ago (35 children)

Same. I don't block anything and it's perfectly fine tbh. So called "tankies" supposedly everywhere, but all I see are left-wing people.

[–] raspirate@lemmy.world 24 points 1 week ago

It feels like people are upset about running into users who are politically left-leaning... on federated social media.

That's like being upset about encountering queer people in the arts, or chuds in the weightlifting space, or conservatives at the gun range. What the hell did you expect?

This post made me curious so I took a look at my block list, and almost all of my blocked accounts are from .world. I've only blocked two .ml users. I wonder how much that varies by instance.

[–] Eldritch@piefed.world 41 points 1 week ago

Well lemmy.world is statistically one of the larger instances. So that's not strictly unusual. And thankfully some of the worst from ml tend to stay in their Echo Chambers being self-aware enough.

Could someone give some examples of these leftist propaganda posts? I just browse all top day, maybe they get diluted enough for me to overlook these.. i've seen this argument pass by so many times.

Whining about .ml takes up more of my feed than .ml

When I joined Lemmy, Lemmy.ml didn't really feel different than Lemmy.world to me.

Maybe I'm taking crazy pills but it's like they got more propagandist on purpose. As if they decided to up the anthem because .grad got defederated by all sane instances.. And what's propaganda good for if it doesn't reach the right people?

Same with tankies having lemmy.world accounts. It's not ironic, it makes sense.

Now Lemmy.ml became their "outreach" instance, where they ban everyone who criticizes them (even on another instance) or even for downvoting (Dessalines did that because his favorite poster 'cowbee' got downvoted by "bots" too much. Then they opted out on lemvotes, so no more checking yourself).

For an outsider it looks like everyone agrees with them because they upvote each other and every critic got either banned or they blocked them themselves and I'm starting to think this might be by design. I wonder how many users are banned from .ml, while still retaining general visibility through federation.

Isn't it basically how Russia and China operate? Keep your own people isolated in a bubble where only your narrative is accepted and at the same time invade other spaces to manipulate their opinions?

I think you will still see users from lemmy.ml despite the instance block. I have blocked it about 2 years ago and its the only reason why I am still here. I hesitated at first because of the open source communities, but then I thought, fuck it

Experimenting with blocklists is fine and how you find your comfort zone on Lemmy.

I once made an experiment in which I blocked lemmy.world - not out of spite, but to just see what the rest of Lemmy has to offer. Turns out, quite much!

Still, too many niche communities are hosted on .world, so here I am again.

"Saying this as someone who considers themselves a leftist"

Which country do you consider yourself a leftist in?

[–] skisnow@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 week ago (4 children)

I think you can be legitimately a Leftist but also not insane. There's a lot of posters over in that part of Lemmy who talk like they'd be overjoyed at the idea of rounding up everyone who'd ever expressed a view to the right of Trotsky, on Day Zero, and sending them to the gulags for being an Enemy of the Revolution.

I'm on .ml and just don't see this. I moved here from .world after the cat food ban. The stupidity burned too much for me to stay there. I'm unsubscribed to most of the lemmy communities where the political crap is, so maybe that helps.

[–] tamal3@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Should i ask what the "cat food ban" was?

[–] solrize@lemmy.ml 26 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (16 children)

It's a long story but basically after some stupid drama, lemmy.world banned discussion of cat food unless there was scientific evidence presented that the cat food was healthy for the cat. The drama had been about vegan cat food discussions in the vegan discussion group. Vegan cat food turns out to be a thing and appears to have enough approvals to be sold in pet stores, but people on .world wanting to talk about it should come over here to .ml. No I wasn't a participant in the vegan group discussion itself. I made some posts in the surrounding drama thread that you can probably find in my .world profile from shortly after I joined.

People should block users and instances that they dont want to see. They are in charge of their account. Then you wont have to feudpost about these people you blocked because you wont see them.

I have never noticed any problem with lemmy.ml.

Block all the low-quality meme/image content if lemmy feels tiring. Stop consuming garbage.

[–] Microtonal_Banana@lemmy.zip 21 points 1 week ago (9 children)

I just scrolled a few pages on that instance and it seems like youre being dramatic.

Pro russia propaganda is generally contained in ml own communities. The tiresome thing for me is zionist tolerant instances and communities and fake palestinians supporter who both side the colonizers and the colonized or defend rhe democrats support for the colonizers

I find the whining and complaining more annoying.

It's easy to block content you don't want (or switch to software that supports it). If it annoys you, block it.

[–] cheers_queers@lemmy.zip 22 points 1 week ago (3 children)

...thats literally what they did tho?

[–] Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works 17 points 1 week ago (25 children)

Yeah but making a post about it is stupid, we're all blocking instances and users we don't like, it's like posting "tie your shoes if tripping on your laces feels tirening". Like what is this? a post for primary schoolers?

I just moved to lemmy.zip from dbzer0 and before that, world, mainly because I want to be the one blocking, I don't want my instance to block for me. I must not be subscribed to the right places, because I just don't see a whole lot of CCP/RUS apologia? I'm pretty good at passing over shit I know I won't agree with though, so it might just not be registering.

It sure would be swell if people could, at the very least, elevate to a 2d view of politics. Hearing the majority of quadrants II, III, and IV all referred to all "far-left" is confusing at best.

Why not just use your subscriptions? People use all and then act all entitled when they have to deal with everything. It's weird.

ML is not far-left, it pretends to be in order to spread pro-Putin, pro-Russian, and pro-Republican state propaganda because they know it’s destroying America. ML and Russia are about as socialist as the Nazis claimed to be.
