Coming here because of Reddit drama isn't particularly special you know...
What would need to happen for you to not go back to reddit?
I dunno, never thought about that
99% of people here come from Lemmy, it's my guess. I migrated when reddit closed down the API, at that time talking about lemmy didnt got you banned yet (like it's now, so lemmy cannot be spoken of on Reddit). I did set up my personal instance to avoid any kind of censorship or defederation (=fediverse approach to censorship) and been happy ever since! I own my posts and comments, i can save and store any post or community i like even if that is deleted upstream, and nobody can delete my account ever again.
How long did it take for the stink to wash off?
Edit to add, Howdy! Welcome!
Have you found the mentally ill Lemmy users yet?
None that I'm aware of
Good answer, but I think some people got upset that you brought up reddit drama for some reason
How familiar are you with how lemmy and the fediverse works?
I really don't know much, I just stumbled upon the site. Also, what's Fediverse?
Fediverse is a network of interconnected social media like piefed lemny mastodon etc that all share the same protocol, ActivityPub, so that posts are shared between the platforms and comment as well more or less.
Each platform has a different scope like Twitter Facebook reddit etc, but they can all communicate.
There is no commercial backing to any, so no advertising budget or media push. But it's also unkillable and will overtake the commercial socials, like Linux will overtake windows (not in my lifetime ofc. )
Reddit only exists as Reddit.com
The people that made Lemmy post the code to make a lemmy server online and give it away for free. A bunch of people set up their own "lemmy" servers (called an "instance") and gave them different names. I'm on midwest.social, and you're on thelemmy.club Each instance generally has its own theme, and the communities (subreddits) on that instance reflect that
The cool thing is all those different servers talk to each other with the ActivityPub protocol. I can browse and post in communities hosted on thelemmy.club and you can do the same on midwest.social. In fact you posted this AMA on a 3rd server (lemmy.ca) in their "Ask Me Anything" community.
Any social media site that uses ActivityPub can talk to a site that also uses it. Some sites are more Reddit like, some are like Twitter, etc.
One thing to know is lemmy doesn't have an "algorithm" like Reddit -- it's not going to feed you content it thinks you'll like. You have to seek out communities and subscribe to them. I suggest clicking Communities at the top of the page, then clicking All so you can see all the communities on all the different instances (servers) running lemmy or something compatible.
E.g. I'm subscribed to some communities on my instance @midwest.social, but there's a bunch of bigger communities on other instances I'm subscribed to as well.
I came from reddit myself... At the time of the great migration.
What did you actually migrate now and not then? Where you on reddit back then?
Why now? Cuz I didn't have much issues with the site until recently
As for where I was, I was all over the place; r/chillanimecorner, r/animedubs, r/swordartonline (yes, I like SAO), I even had my own subreddit (r/Mecha_Scrapyard)
Well, welcome here I guess. The community is much smaller but very much more active, and while there are bots, indeed they are a small minority.
Try to be as much active as you can, Lemmy is thriving but do not expect the background noise of reddit, nor the porn. Neither the censorship, but there is some.
I would also avoid well known instances like .world or .ml and find an instance that do not federated with too many others...
