I'm dutch, and I hate that every time fuel costs increase we get a discussion about lowering taxes because the "poor people" need to be able to drive to work. We have practically perfect public transport and poor people cannot afford a car. Give a discount on train tickets instead please.

Rules
-
Be nice to each other. Being aggressive or inflammatory towards other users will get you banned. Name calling or obvious trolling falls under that. Hate cars, hate the system, but not people. While some drivers definitely deserve some hate, most of them didn't choose car-centric life out of free will.
-
No bigotry or hate. Racism, transphobia, misogyny, ableism, homophobia, chauvinism, fat-shaming, body-shaming, stigmatization of people experiencing homeless or substance users, etc. are not tolerated. Don't use slurs. You can laugh at someone's fragile masculinity without associating it with their body. The correlation between car-culture and body weight is not an excuse for fat-shaming.

Stay on-topic. Submissions should be on-topic to the externalities of car culture in urban development and communities globally. Posting about alternatives to cars and car culture is fine. Don't post literal car fucking.
-
No traffic violence. Do not post depictions of traffic violence. NSFW or NSFL posts are not allowed. Gawking at crashes is not allowed. Be respectful to people who are a victim of traffic violence or otherwise traumatized by it. News articles about crashes and statistics about traffic violence are allowed. Glorifying traffic violence will get you banned.

I know and was a poor person('s) with a car. Keep in mind me car cost me about €600 a year including tax, insurance and fixing it(somethins I do myself or with friends) now. And I'm not considered social minimum anymore.
So owning a car is expensive(€600 a year is a lot of money), but I doesn't mean poor people don't have them.
Higher fuel prices suck, we can me the decision to not eat at a restaurant anymore once a month, but some people can't. But lowering the taxes for everybody is just stupid.
I hate that I need to own a car. Or anybody for that matter. I live in a village of 6000, no train and a bus one-time a hour (in rush hours 2 times a hour). I can't make it home when my work ends at 22 and can't make it to work when I need to start at 8.
The only solution in my eyes would be cheap or free(it's is still cheaper in gasoline to take the car then the bus) public transport and more. There are a lot of village's and cities where you are very limited in public transport. So just cheaper train tickets not gonna help a lot of people not near a train stations. We need to invest in public transport (and I do prefer public owned and not for profit in any way)
We and many friends really loved the cheaper ticket for the train this summer. (Bit annoying it didn't include bus, metro and tram) For some €50 a month was still a lot of money. But we all enjoyed it. Seeing friends and family. So yeah cheap train tickets helps a bit, but especially for work related or medical appointment isn't practically perfect)
So fucking glad I got rid of my car and I don't have a monthly car payment. But holy fuck, are some people really paying that much for their cars?!
They just can’t be seen driving anything less than a brand new Bronco.
Bronco's are girly cars. Real men drive MAGA Prolapser 3000's!
Well new cars start somewhere in the 40k range and I have customers buying 100k suv and trucks these people aren't bright.
Meanwhile, I thought my one time $700 ebike and accessories was a big purchase. I don't even pay for gas.
Hope everyone is enjoying their further proletarianization! Rents? Up! Transportation costs? Way up! Healthcare? Lucky if you can get it at all. Go to college? Enjoy 20-30 years of debt. Jobs? Down!
Or, 1 in 5 new car buyers shouldn't be buying a new car.
I could slap them silly if everyone agrees.
in case you didn't read the article, it covers buying a used car as well
very true
Why are people buying a new car? Cars easily last 20years with basic maintenance. You can also buy 1-2 year used for 50% off list.
You haven't been shopping used cars lately have you? Sure, some luxury cars will see a dramatic drop after a year or 2 of owning, but not most. My 2022 Maverick that I bought new, for 24k, is currently valued for $23,400 at Carvana.
A coworker just bought a 2018 civic with 81000 miles for $15000. The used car market is insanely overpriced.
Carvana is a scam to inflate the price of used cars.
I have 2 20+ yo cars that run but I don’t trust them for long trips so I have a new car as well
Not anymore. Most new cars only work about 5 yrs, after that sudden 'unexpected' problems start popping up. Obviously in built degradation - according to couple mechanics I trust, german brands are really bad / good at timing their failures at the end of your loan term. But other brands are following also - so pre covid cars are still fine-ish.
1000 per month is still too cheap. Ecocidal narcissism needs to be far more painful than that.
Every time.

I want everyone to know it was me.

You even upvoted your own comment with your alts! You must really like cars.
He creates alts, then makes those strange reports while downvoting every single post I make, regardless of subject.
In DMs, he says I'm here to destroy Lemmy. I guess I'm doing that by talking about how cars suck?
You banning random people and claiming they're me 🤣 Sure I'm in the list a time or two but you're delusional if you think I'm the only person who downvotes you.
But everyone who doesn't like you is me, right?
P.S. Lemmy seems to ship with privacy invading features like "Stalker Pages": https://lemmy.today/u/PapaSkwat
Stay informed.

Wut? You guys have monthly payments for cars? Is this some NA thing? If you really need a a car, just buy used shitbox. There is no flex in being in debt.
I'm paying $700 a month for a used shitbox, because I had to get a secondary loan to pay for fixing the shitbox's engine.
🎵 *And I'm proud to be an American where at least I know I'm free 🎶 *
Here in the US, even used shitboxes are very expensive, and you never know if it'll break down on you or not. When I was a teen, my first car cost $700 USD. Now for evne a used piece of shit in my area, they are around $10,000 USD
Curious what area you're in, even a used 2016 sedan with 125k miles is only ~$6,500 where I'm at. Shitboxes go for far far less than that.
I'm more curious where you're at then. Because nothing that cheap here.
Kansas City metro area. Not saying they're all immaculate or anything, but a quick look locally:
2016 Hyundai Elantra Sport, ~125k mi, $6800 https://www.craigslist.org/view/d/shawnee-2016-hyundai-elantra-sport/ndQo8xenJCriyRMWK3yeL2
2011 Kia Sorento LX, ~100k mi, $6000, https://www.craigslist.org/view/d/independence-2011-kia-sorento-lx/d7GbL9qLvLbGV1mJNgsXe8
2000 Ford Taurus, ~220k mi, $3000, https://www.craigslist.org/view/d/oak-grove-2000-ford-taurus-drives-great/wbBrmgxAUZDukLuCLYjQRy
If you are not going to invest in public infrastructure, the least you could do is allow in affordable Chinese automobiles. Many of them can be had for $10,000 - $15,000.
Here in the US we used to do that, in the 80's I think. But all I ever see around here is big ass SUVs now.
Well yeah I bought an electric car just before musk dropped the prices multiple times over night.
That meant I was kinda stuck with my shitty ev before I could pay down the loan so that upon selling I wouldnt be stuck with a loan and no car. Had to keep the car 2 years longer than I was planning.
That happens, such is life. Now gonna buy a van for longer trips and transporting work stuff around, and cheapest ev to roll around the local city runs.
I've been driving used EVs for almost 20 years now, and it's been great cheap transportation. We did get hit with around an unexpected $8k battery replacement on a Nissan Leaf, but it was still cheaper in the long run than a new electric or a used ICE.
8k USD? Worse than I thought!
It's probably not that bad anymore. Battery prices have fallen steadily since then.
The early Leafs were also particularly bad because the batteries were passively air cooled. We knew it was a gamble, but they were also really cheap. Still, I think we got 60k miles on top of the 20k it already had when we got it. The new battery hasn't lost any appreciable range in the 4 years since it was replaced.
I'm more about "Fuck Car Companies" and "Banks" than I am about "Fuck Cars". Fuck the greed. Foreign cars are better than domestic nowadays anyway. Also, money no longer talks. They want you to go through a bank so everyone can scrape a little more off for their backyard swimming pools.
I’m more about “Fuck Car Companies” and “Banks” than I am about “Fuck Cars”.
so you just hate capitalism, not cars. which is fair enough.
That's quite a generalized comment. I like some cars.
