I thought it was some kind of shitpost until i read the community lol

I don't get what exactly made you think this would be something like a "shitpost"? Do you mean the post title or about the article from the projects website? Its just a normal update blog post information about the changes and rational. I usually like this kind of update posts once a month or so for projects I care and want to stay informed.

I guess Bottles is not as popular as it used to be.

Would be nice if you were more specific.

Read it as if the title was talking of a water bottle, it seems a shitpost about techbros wanting to reinvent the wheel and having to enshittify everthing

Definitely has a buzzword vibe, and reads funny if you have no idea what it refers to. Heck, it's funny even when you do!

When you say it like that, I see it. It can handle Soda and is adaptive. Worthy of the v62 label!

I used to be pretty into Linux Gaming, but I don't get why one needs all this nowadays. Just use Proton and Steam to launch any game and your golden.

Every time I use bottles it never works for me. I’ll give this new update a try.

Make sure that the .exe you are trying to execute is inside the virtual C:// drive! That was my mistake, and I'm not sure if its documented well.

I actually got most things to run I throw at it.

No kidding? I found it a little difficult to set up certain things, but overall it's been pretty good.

[–] goreverminski@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

Yea same. Never gotten it to work lol!

Same. I've been using Linux since 95. I've built my own kernels. I've configured VMs, containers and clusters. If used raw Wine to run games when Proton was not around. Yet I could never understand how to use this or why this exists.

It's basically doing what "playonlinux" used to do. It separates containers of different Wine setups - so for example you have some old Windows game that only runs in a window at 1024x768, you make one "bottle" to deal with that, but it doesn't mess up the settings for running a separate "bottle" for a more recent a Windows-only utility program, which requires a fullscreen desktop, and dotnet4.5 and directx etc.

It also gives the setup a GUI, and lots of dropdown menus for setup, which is easier for most people.

There's a bit of crossover with Lutris - though Lutris works particularly well for games that are already in its database, but it's sometimes quite difficult to install anything outside of that - I found bottles to be a lot easier for installing fairly obscure or forgotten software - generally old games, obscure games and hardware configuration utilities for A/V equipment, but also sometimes stuff like indie games or other games that aren't on Steam.

I do use Playonlinux, Lutris and Bottles, as for some reason, sometimes I've been able to get a program running in one and not the other. I very rarely install anything on the default "raw" system Wine any more.

Bottles was the only way I could get the stupid Cricut app to work on Linux. My next vinyl cutter will NOT be a cricut.

[–] Quazatron@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

OK, so I guess Heroic, Lutris, Itch and Steam fill that function for me. Thanks for the clarification.

I have it working for a few things. One example is Guitar Pro that I use regularly this way.

Me, not looking at the community this was posted in just like…. What… the fuck… OH Linux that makes WAY more sense.

[–] ImgurRefugee114@reddthat.com 5 points 1 week ago

I thought there was a new popular hipster 'proto' soda pop beverage or something

I daily drive Linux and use bottles... I need to sleep.

[–] warmaster@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Sounds great, I'll try it. But Faugus has been simpler for me since I last tried Bottles when it was one of the first launchers.
