"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

Made a digital version if anyone wants it

Any chance you could scan the linocut version instead? The inconsistency in the ink makes it look better, more authentic. Would make for a sick sticker

I appreciate the art but not the message.

  • Feeding the Grift - First and foremost "AI" doesn't exist. So this just feeds the grift. Personally I always use quotes around "AI" to be more clear.
  • Muddying the Waters - As a result of "AI" not existing, there's no objective line between computer-aided art and "AI" art. Should we boycott an image if we find out the creator used some advanced image filter (or generated game levels, etc)? Is that "AI"? There is no objective measure or even a scientific definition. It's all bullshit. See point above.
  • Ineffective Praxis - If this goal is to "fight the machine", then boycotting computer-aided art seems like a completely pointless distraction. Maybe like "protest a data center" would be better? I can't think of a real good slogan...

Just because AI is not actual artificial intelligence doesn't mean that the thing people refer to doesn't exist. Misnamed, yes, but also existing. Also, objectivity is overrated, there is plenty of unambiguous cases and the existence of any ambiguity does not prevent us from being for or against. Protesting data centers sure sounds like a good idea too though!
