Lefty Memes

7285 readers
69 users here now

An international (English speaking) socialist Lemmy community free of "ML" (read: Dengist) influence. This is a place for undogmatic shitposting and memes from a progressive, anti-capitalist and truly anti-imperialist perspective, regardless of specific ideology.

Serious posts, news, discussion and agitprop/stuff that's better fit for a poster than a meme go in c/Socialism.

If you are new to socialism, you can ask questions and find resources over on c/Socialism101.

Please don't forget to help keep this community clean by reporting rule violations, updooting good contributions and downdooting those of low quality!

Rules

Version without spoilers

0. Only post socialist memes

That refers to funny image macros and means that generally videos and screenshots are not allowed. Exceptions include explicitly humorous and short videos, as well as (social media) screenshots depicting a funny situation, joke, or joke picture relating to socialist movements, theory, societal issues, or political opponents. Examples would be the classic case of humorous Tumblr or Twitter posts/threads. (and no, agitprop text does not count as a meme. Please post agitprop here)

0.5 [Provisional Rule] Try to use alt text or image descriptions to allow for greater accessibility

(Please take a look at our wiki page for the guidelines on how to actually write alternative text!)

We encourage alternative text (from now referred to as "alt text") to be added to all posts/comments containing media, such as images, animated GIFs, videos, audio files, and custom emojis.
EDIT: For files you share in the comments, a simple summary should be enough if they’re too complex.

We are committed to social equity and to reducing barriers of entry, including (digital) communication and culture. It takes each of us only a few moments to make a whole world of content (more) accessible to a bunch of folks.

When alt text is absent, a reminder will be issued. If you don't add the missing alt text within 48 hours, the post will be removed. No hard feelings.

0.5.1 Style tip about abbreviations and short forms

When writing stuff like "lol" and "iirc", it's a good idea to try and replace those with their all caps counterpart

  • ofc => OFC
  • af = AF
  • ok => OK
  • lol => LOL
  • bc => BC
  • bs => BS
  • iirc => IIRC
  • cia => CIA
  • nato => Nato (you don't spell it when talking, right?)
  • usa => USA
  • prc => PRC
  • etc.

Why? Because otherwise (AFAIK), screen readers will try to read them out as actually words instead of spelling them

1. Socialist Unity in the form of mutual respect and good faith interactions is enforced here

Try to keep an open mind, other schools of thought may offer points of view and analyses you haven't considered yet. Also: This is not a place for the Idealism vs. Materialism or rather Anarchism vs. Marxism debate(s), for that please visit c/AnarchismVsMarxism.

2. Anti-Imperialism means recognizing capitalist states like Russia and China as such

That means condemning (their) imperialism, even if it is of the "anti-USA" flavor.

3. No liberalism, (right-wing) revisionism or reactionaries.

That includes so called: Social Democracy, Democratic Socialism, Dengism, Market Socialism, Patriotic Socialism, National Bolshevism, Anarcho-Capitalism etc. . Anti-Socialist people and content have no place here, as well as the variety of "Marxist"-"Leninists" (read: Dengists) (actual ML's are welcome as long as they agree to the rules and don't just copy paste/larp about stuff from a hundred years ago).

4. No Bigotry.

The only dangerous minority is the rich.

5. Don't demonize previous and current socialist experiments or (leading) individuals.

We must constructively learn from their mistakes, while acknowledging their achievements and recognizing when they have strayed away from socialist principles.

6. Don't irrationally idolize/glorify previous and current socialist experiments or (leading) individuals.

Notable achievements in all spheres of society were made by various socialist/people's/democratic republics around the world. Mistakes, however, were made as well: bureaucratic castes of parasitic elites - as well as reactionary cults of personality - were established, many things were mismanaged and prejudice and bigotry sometimes replaced internationalism and progressiveness.

According to the Murdoch owned right-wingnut rag (WSJ) 69% in favour leaves 31% neutral or not in favour - 31% is NOT just under half, it's just under a third. Lying shitsacks.

[–] Sc00ter@lemmy.zip 20 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

Just to be clear. That image isnt saying that WSJ reported that stat. That image says WSJ is saying new yorkers dont like him any longer, but the pole data (with no source stated) shows 69% favorable.

[–] waitingtech@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

Understood.

As far as I can tell he's slightly left of centre, not even particularly radical.

Painting this man as a rabid communist, when as far as I can tell he's mainly been fixing potholes, is a really stupid move from the right wing propaganda machine.

Even if they think they'll be able to rig the next elections, alienating half the population is a dumb idea.

[–] SocialistVibes01@lemmy.ml 17 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Americans are irrationally anti-communist, that strategy is being used because it works.

[–] Souvenir@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

They were irrationally anti-communist, anti-socialist, and pro-capitalist, but polling suggests that's changing.

It's the same with the whole Israel thing. There's been a slow but noticeable shift in public opinion.

[–] UltraMagnus0001@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Hey the Banana Republic is revolting! COMMUNIST! Here comes the American warships to stop communism in the name of the capitalist overlords with taxpayers money. Isn't that sosialism for the rich?

[–] SocialistVibes01@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 days ago

Nowadays can they even reach the target without killing themselves? 😂

[–] JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Everyone gets called communist. And when everyone's communist, no one is.

[–] Folstar@lemmus.org 9 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Is it a stupid move? Calling anything left of hunting the poor for sport "liberal" and anything left of giving the 1% all the money "communism" seems to be working extremely well for the right-wing. Perhaps we are dropping the ball by not giving an actual extreme left perspective in politics to balance things out.

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 80 points 5 days ago (1 children)

It's New York, I am sure a non trivial amount of people don't care about him at all. And then what's left over are his actual supporters.

Ofcourse, the headline is obviously using the statistics in bad faith in an attempt to spin this in their favor.

Or another words, it is propaganda. Which I think is effective in every language although my sample size is limited.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 61 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The actual implication of the headline is that over half do support him. Non-support includes those apathetic and against. Saying "almost less than half lack support" means "more than half do support." The other less than 50% is shared by "no opinion" and "against."

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 17 points 5 days ago

You're right, the way it is worded, anyone who doesn't support him would include the people that are indifferent or don't care.

[–] i_need_your_bones@piefed.social 61 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (2 children)

Ok I'll admit I didn't get that at first what the fuck dude how'd you look at the stats and get that positioning from over 50% support

[–] Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca 78 points 5 days ago

how

Deliberately.

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 14 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

Not what that means

A Siena University poll showed that 30% of New York voters like the DSA and 47% don’t have a favorable view of them.

https://abcnews4.com/news/nation-world/almost-half-of-new-new-yorkers-arent-supportive-of-democratic-socialists-of-america-poll-zohran-mamdani-michigan-bernie-sanders

Edit: Worth noting, though, this is NY State likely voters. NYC is 49% support. 32% not support.

[–] i_need_your_bones@piefed.social 4 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

Oh ok, in context that makes sense but I hope you can understand my confusion.

Thanks for the information

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

The headline was very much written to make DSA seem unpopular.

[–] hemmes@lemmy.world 51 points 5 days ago

Okay, funny timing in my All thread

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 41 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Here’s the actual article.

“New Yorkers”?

As in the entire State? A state that has large red rural areas? Polling people that aren’t even Mamdani’s constituents?

Some of the poll info is from the New York Post, an unapologetically right wing rag that has no problems trash talking the left.

[–] Funkt4st1c@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago

Maybe they dont like him because theyre jealous they dont get all of those sweet, sweet, DSA dollars and it exposes the incompetency of their own governments

[–] mavu@discuss.tchncs.de 14 points 4 days ago

SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF NEW YORKERS UNHAPPY WITH MAMDANI!

MAMDANI IN TROUBLE! LESS SUPPORT FOR HIS POLICIES THAN EXPECTED!

MAJORITY OF NEW YORKERS NOT SUPPORTIVE OF MAMDANI~s~ ~opponents~

[–] deacon@lemmy.world 24 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Their mandate is merely resounding but not thunderously overwhelming yet? Great reporting.

[–] athatet@lemmy.zip 14 points 5 days ago

Well, no one has been slammed or blasted so there is still hope.

[–] Bwaz@lemmy.world 15 points 5 days ago

What an idiot headline. That will work on loads of idiots.

[–] Nollij@sopuli.xyz 12 points 4 days ago

I hate to be the guy saying "Simpsons did it", but this exact same joke was used to highlight how dumb someone was.

In 1995.

Nah, the US is just that good at propaganda that hurts us.

[–] sik0fewl@piefed.ca 12 points 5 days ago (1 children)

That’s less than more than 50%.

Source?

"Two days before the day after tomorrow!"

[–] Septimaeus@infosec.pub 2 points 5 days ago

Reminds me of the old joke about second place, because of all the losers, you’re first.

[–] Avicenna@programming.dev 2 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Does someone read this and go "oh no %50 don't support Madani so I should quench all my positive feelings for him." Maybe they do and that is why they produced this excrement piece of a headline.

[–] takeda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 5 days ago

The title says almost half of New Yorkers aren't supportive of DSA.

Now:

  • that means majority of New Yorkers are supportive
  • "aren't supportive" implies that people who are apathetic are also included in that group
  • there's also suggestion they might have counted people from New York State instead of New York City, but I don't believe that
[–] huppakee@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

People just want to see their bias confirmed. They read this and think 'see, i knew he wasn't as popular as they say'.

[–] SocialistVibes01@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 days ago

Should they?
