Firefox says it will keep supporting uBlock Origin even as Microsoft Edge and other Chromium browsers phase it out under Manifest V3.

If it goes... I don't know what I'll do.

Go out and touch grass probably.

Get a hobby.

Perfect my molotov recipe.

Sometimes I think it was a mistake to let the programs we primarily use to view text and images become bloated virtual machines that execute megabytes of arbitrary code with every page load.

Well, like many other things: it's not so much a "we" as it is a "them".

But maybe we should reboot the whole navigation thing?

Every boardroom has their price.

Someday.

I'm not so sure about that, Ublock is the reason I use Firefox, and I don't think I'm alone in that. And I'm pretty sure they know that.

donated for a new cubical poster. w/e year that was. was new and better for a while.

Happy with Librewolf. I can't imagine using my browser everyday if I don't have a good adblocker on it like uBO.

Does opera not support ublock?

[–] boonhet@lemmy.zip 4 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

It's been Chromium based for ages now. Meaning they'll likely eventually stop supporting manifest V2 too, unless Google makes it easy for them to keep supporting it.

It's a bad take, open source projects can be spun out to whatever branch you want and not needing a host support to keep it going..that's why browser like brave can have its own hard coded adblock without relying on extensions like ublock and things like manifest V2 and V3 support, as it doesn't need it as it has nothing to do with Google other than using their open source engine.

opera is ass anyway

Since there are only two major browsers... one of which admittedly wears many disguises.

[–] Jiral@lemmy.world 13 points 9 hours ago (7 children)

Not entirely correct. When we look at engines there are Blink, gecko and webkit. Unless you also count Ladybird's engine I guess.

Yes Blink is a webkit fork but it has been separate for a good while.

Isn't it crazy that Safari and thereby also Chrome/Chromium are at the heart based on work by KDE for its Konqueror?

What about emacs' eww?

A misleading title shilling for Firefox. Brave has full support and it won't even remove it nor does it actually need it as it has its own in-house fully hard coded adblock that doesn't need Google services whatsoever.

[–] toadster@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 hour ago

Still a chromium based browser though.

How many braveshillings did you get for this comment?

[–] heh@lemmy.world 11 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Worst part is google could kill Firefox at anytime because they provide a very large amount of Mozilla’s funding.

[–] Jiral@lemmy.world 18 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

No, not really. Firefox and Gecko are crucial for Google to avoid being broken up by regulators. They have to keep Firefox alive for that reason.

True although how true the statement is, in the US at least, is in doubt given the current government leadership and direction.

[–] matlag@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 hours ago

They would just have to funnel the money, one last time, but to a different direction. It's not corruption if "he" takes the money...

It is bad enough if anti-trust actions get moving against a functional monopoly in the EU. Really bad for business ... of the monopolist.
