AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.
This is what movies do. They convince us that some things are normal or constant. Themes, archetypes, etc, but also ideas about how the world actually works.
Look at any movie featuring the military in the last 30 years. They make 19-25 year olds seem like capable competent and well intentioned professionals. Nowhere do you see that 18 year old kid fresh out of boot not knowing his ass from his elbow, trying to joust a B1 stand.
It's all propaganda. It always has been.

In the new Spider-Man film there isnt anyone directly opposing Spider-Mans face recognition hack but the whole film frames Peter's misuse of tech, which is primarily highlighted during a conversation Peter has with Bruce Banner. It seems clear to me that this film is setting up a big conflict where Peter's tech will be used for significant harm.
So everyone saying that Spider-Man is now promoting Flock/Palantir/Surveillance seems to have quite literally missed the plot.
This was insightful, I had not made these connections.
What worries me is people walking out of the cinemas thinking (perhaps mostly unconsciously) that the surveillance helped save the day, while I watched a clip just the other day what a camera reading a plate (let alone face) incorrectly can lead to (in that case arresting people at gunpoint only to let them go later because the camera had read an X as a Y).

Very likely, they got access to an unlimited budget so they're using it to advertise in popular movies. Kinda like how car brands do the same thing.

In this case, I believe Spidey tapped into the well-established stream of realtime unencrypted video feeds from private and public sources, and simply searched every single one in realtime and foundna match, using a program that had never even trained on faces at all.
In light of the far-fetched nature of all of it, I don't really draw lines between Flock/Axon, etc., and what happened in the film.
Flock is much, much worse. They store your shit and share access and search tools with the highest (and lowest) bidder. If anything, I prefer Spidey's approach better, as it seems limited to only the good guys in the movies, and only occasionally (Ultron, Vision if he was bad, probably more that I'm forgetting) used by bad guys.
That said, I can totally see why you would see it the way you describe. It's not pretty. All the crazy movies we watched growing up and now weren't supposed to be an instruction manual...
