The announcement represented a stunning reversal for an event that had been billed as potentially one of the largest celebrations of jazz and Black music ever staged in Southern California.

The festival was to feature more than 100 performances and events, more than 150 artists and dozens of venues stretching across Los Angeles County. John Legend, Janelle Monáe, Charlie Wilson, Raphael Saadiq, Parliament-Funkadelic featuring George Clinton, Terrace Martin, Poncho Sanchez, Big Freedia and scores of other national and local artists had been promoted as part of the lineup.

“Due to significant, unanticipated last-minute public safety and municipal costs associated with the final permitting of the On The Beach Festival, we have reached the decision to unfortunately postpone this year’s inaugural LA Jazz Festival,” Ludlow said.

This sounds fucky. How do you get this far into the process and just now discover the cost of your finale? Did the city try to screw them with last-minute bureaucracy?

Glad they'll try again. It sounds like an awesome festival.

I wouldn't be surprised if this killed all momentum. I'm baffled at this story. There was absolutely no digging in to find the answer here, just a lot of talking this festival up after it's been cancelled.

yeah i wouldn't trust these people again, especially when the reason is being avoided so much

Festival founder and CEO Martin Ludlow announced that the remainder of the inaugural festival would be postponed until 2027, citing what he described as significant and unexpected last-minute public safety and municipal costs associated with final permitting for the festival’s massive closing weekend at Dockweiler Beach.

This is the only time the reason for cancellation appeared in this entire story.

What the fuck happened?
