Accurate body measurements can make a huge difference when developing or adjusting a garment pattern. Even a small measurement issue can affect fit, proportions, and how well a pattern works across different sizes.

Before moving into pattern grading, it helps to double-check key measurements and make sure they are being taken consistently.

For those who sew or make patterns regularly, which measurements do you find most important—or most difficult—to get right?

I always have trouble making sure the tape is straight on my hip measurement. I take it 3 times to be sure!

Some of those measurements are different from what I'm learning at school. I guess that corresponds to different methods of pattern making. We don't take the length of the torso at the centre, we measure from the shoulder just below the ear (high shoulder point was called?). The bust measurements is also different, we measure the circumference of the chest, above the bust, then the bust size from armpit to armpit over the most prominent part of the bust, and lastly the bust height.
