Here is an example of an Uruky search result: Uruky search for Lemmy Fediverse

[-] maltasoron@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 months ago

How is Uruky in practice? I've been using DDG and Qwant, but the results often feel lacklustre.

I’ve been using it for a couple months now, and I really like it and don’t feel like I’m missing on anything.

[-] thesdev@feddit.org 2 points 2 months ago

I can second that. The interface is not as polished as Google and others, but getting to skip AI overviews and ads is so worth it.

[-] unglueclass23@programming.dev 3 points 2 months ago

Yeah it took some time getting used to but now I really don't mind it. Just had to turn on favicons in settings.

Depends on the search index you use. I think EUSP is better than bing (which is what DDG and Qwant uses or used) or at least it's close. The good thing I like about Uruky, that was mentioned in article, is you can cycle through the available indexes rather easily and on top of that use 3 web fallback engines so if you can't find something you can always go to ecosia / qwant with 1 button click and your search query will be auto-inserted there.

So, I need to pay 5€ per month? That is A LOT and I hope it will go down soon.

Also anonymity is a big challenge. MetaGer is also paid and they offer a browser extension to anonymously generate tokens somehow, so that your searches are probably not linked to your full payment information.

[-] unglueclass23@programming.dev 1 points 2 months ago

Is it a lot? I know it's relative and does add up but that's like 2 coffees.

Yeah I tried MetaGer some time ago but didn't hook me in, can't remember why

[-] pantherina@feddit.org 1 points 2 months ago

Yes but I pay that for a VPN that tunnels ALL my traffic, vs a search engine that retrieves a bit of text and a few images for me.

Different workloads, but I also pay my VPN anonymously, unlike such a search engine.

Btw, MetaGer solves the Firefox extension problem "blind signature" also via a separate app, which is a pretty bad solution

Not sure if the Firefox extension works in Ironfox/Firefox Android

I am searching for results of this european search index, and this is really confusing?

  • Staan.ai (made for AI?)
  • Openwebsearch.eu (not intended for normal users) and OpenWebIndex
  • eu-searchperspective.com from ecosia.

Ecosia and Qwant make the "european search perspective", so do you use that when using Qwant and Ecosia?

[-] Melchior@feddit.org 1 points 2 months ago

Ecosia uses the "european search perspective" in France and Germany right now. Outside that I believe it is still Bing.

See my other comment below

Try to just search something in Ecosia. When you go on the three dots next to the result, you see where it comes from. For me the results are EUSP.

I played around with it a bit more. It seems to me that the engine depends on the search term. Open source stuff like "linux", "gimp" or mastodon uses EUSP, as do most place names. When you look up people however it uses mostly Google or Bing. No idea it is really weird.

[-] pantherina@feddit.org 1 points 1 month ago

Lol interesting find!

EUSP is the joint venture company (a business partnership between Ecosia and Qwant). Staan is the product (the actual search index/database) developed by EUSP to provide the data.

I just refer to EUSP index 🤷

It's not just for AI.

Ecosia / Qwant have been integrating it but afaik now only for Germany / France (for now) https://blog.ecosia.org/launching-our-european-search-index/ so other people shouldn't have access to it through them

[-] pantherina@feddit.org 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Ok I am trying to get infos and none available. Qwant doesnt say and there is also no change in the search URL wether I switch to germany or not? Maybe on german language?

Ecosia doesnt offer it to me at all

The resulting search string has the parameter "method=index" 🤔

[-] sedot@feddit.org 1 points 2 months ago

Interesting, thanks for posting. Can it search for images and videos also?

[-] unglueclass23@programming.dev 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Reverse image search? no

Regular search for images ? yeah they have a couple of providers for that https://uruky.com/docs/search-engine-providers
