Another one bytes the dust. Vex is a YouTube (gaming oriented) tech channel with over 200k subscribers. He just switched and started his journey to Linux. It's a 46 minutes video, so there is lot of coverage. I think its always interesting to see of someone switching to Linux and documenting it in public, especially someone with lots of followers (OK its not a PewDiePie... but still).

I've had this Windows laptop, the Zephyrus G16. It is fast, has a beautiful display, lightweight, well-built... but it runs Windows 11. That has always been nagging me that it is holding it back, and I have only heard amazing things about Linux for the efficiency and customizability. So let's see what it can actually do.

I recently had the power cut off suddenly, and the computer subsequently couldn't find the boot drive. I went into the UEFI and tried selecting different partitions, hoping that some kind of boot process was stored there. I found one that seemed to have a boot record, and it dropped me into a Windows recovery prompt, despite me having nuked Windows long ago.

I was able to use a Linux install drive to mount the boot partition, drop the necessary boot files in the respective folder, and I could even clean up the leftovers from Windows. Drive now boots fine, and I learned something.

Let's see Windows do any of that. Moving to Linux was the best thing I've ever done for my computer.

I discovered this bloody annoyance in XP I believe, or maybe was 98. The way I used to get rid of it was to start the install of whatever OS, format the drive in one large partition, reboot, then install whatever OS I was going to install and partition accordingly. Took a few extra minutes but well worth it vs doing the whole install and remove files later/tell current OS to ignore other files.

I'm a "Loonixtard" now, according to someone that jumped on my live lol. I don't talk about linux, unless someone asks, I just have some tags that state I'm on linux

Starting with Arch is a bad choice unless you have a huge desire to become an expert in Arch. If you like Plasma, start with Kubuntu. And he will be very disappointed with Mint because there is not Plasma/KDE desktop in Mint anymore. That was an entertaining video to see a new user discover how cool Linux actually is. Minus the gaming since I don't game.

Thanks for sharing. I like these kinds of videos too.

Edit: I bet the problems he ran into were due to CachyOS (and NVIDIA). I don't know why people keep recommending some arch linux stuff to beginners.
