Ugh. We're doing Narnia again?
To be fair, this is The Magicians Nephew being made first which we haven’t had made in the two previous BBC and Film adaptations. So at least it’s a new book we haven’t had done yet.
Narnia is really a great book series and the first movies were good but missed a lot of key elements. There's a lot to work with.
No the first movies were not good. They were corny and terrible.
What key elements did they miss?
The slightly subtle nods to Christianity.
Narnia's back. Harry potter's back. The Golden Compass is back. The people yearn for rebooted millennial fantasy series, apparently.

It's an old story but it got popular when the movie came out in 2005
People or studio executives?
Fr I want to see some new ideas. My kids have both grown up with nothing but remakes.
You'll be glad to know she's starting with one of the books that's never been adapted before.
Narnia is awful Christian propaganda, what a waste of money
Some of the best art we have throughout history was Christian propaganda. That’s why learning the historical context is important. You don’t have to believe everything you see.
But the books are terrible on top of that
I mean, this is just false though. They're incredibly engaging, well-written, and quite funny to boot (except maybe the Silver Chair and the Last Battle). I can't wait for my kid to be old enough to read them for the first time.
Horse and His Boy didn't age very well, either.
Yeah this is kind of like defending all the "great Harry Potter art" despite Rowling being deserving of 6ft of dirt.
Just because it has inspired great things doesn't make it worthy of continued existence.
This is the literature equivalent of Virgin Mary statues in an old bathtub on the lawn
I really like Greta Gerwig's movies and am excited to see what she will do with Narnia. Iirc she is a fan of the books and really wanted to do an adaptation. Happy to see Netflix is giving her a proper budget!
This has Rings of Power vibes all over.
That is what making a billion dollar movie will do for a director.
