Wooo boy does this need to be top comment.

Good catch.

Grok translation everyone, as reliable as Elon Musk's stock valuations.

It's a "fighter"? Are we imagining drones dogfighting? What's it's main target?

[-] jws_shadotak@sh.itjust.works 10 points 16 hours ago

Some of the constraints imposed on fighter jets is life support and G-force limitations for the pilot. Removing the pilot and allowing an on-board computer handle things in the moment (e.g. dogfights) gives an unmanned jet the upper hand.

It's obviously a step toward completely automated war machines, but that's the justification for the "unmanned fighter jet"

Defense budgets.

[-] JillyB@beehaw.org 10 points 22 hours ago

CCAs or collaborative combat aircraft are the new hotness in military aviation. Basically smaller unmanned fighter jets that work alongside a traditional manned fighter. The idea is that you can have maybe 4 or 5 fighter jets worth of capability but only one of them has a human pilot on board. So the manned fighter can hang back and tell a farther forward one to fire a missile. Is it a wunderwaffen? Is it a boondoggle? Idk man

A lot of companies in Japan have a heavy industries branch or similar. Yamaha has all kinds of verticals as they're happy to sell you a piano or a motorcycle (or both!)

[-] aeiou@piefed.social 6 points 19 hours ago

Mitsubishi and it's offshoots has made everything at one point or another. Paper, drugs, TVs, cars, tanks, planes, submarines...

[-] possumparty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 11 hours ago

[-] Ghyste@sh.itjust.works 3 points 19 hours ago

[-] inari@piefed.zip 8 points 21 hours ago

Major Japanese companies have insane levels of diversification

[-] k0e3@lemmy.ca 2 points 15 hours ago

It's not so much diversification, but the fact that many of them were zaibatsu, the only ones able to do anything other than farming. They just had a huuuuge head start.

[-] Zwiebel@feddit.org 3 points 17 hours ago

The term for it is 'conglomerate'

[-] 0ops@piefed.zip 2 points 16 hours ago

Subaru used to be a part of Fuji Heavy Industries, who actually started out making aircraft. They've since been renamed to simply "Subaru Corporation", apparently.

[-] SGforce@lemmy.ca 1 points 20 hours ago

Hitachi is the best example

[-] spicytuna62@lemmy.world 4 points 20 hours ago

Now I'll know if the plane overhead is piloted by a lesbian! Nice!

[-] OpenStars@discuss.online 5 points 18 hours ago
