With this move Nvidia is not only acquiring the HuggingFace platform, but they might also effectively acquire the copyright to the llama.cpp project, together with the entire team behind it.

In February 2026 the llama.cpp team was employed by HF in order to continue working on llama.cpp and the ggml library.

This includes:

• Georgi Gerganov
• Xuan-Son Nguyen
• Aleksander Grygier
• Victor Mustar
• Lysandre
• Julien Chaumond

Now with the acquisition, llama.cpp's future looks a lot less certain given Nvidia's poor track record with open-source.

This is still rather speculative at this stage, but it's definitely possible for the llama.cpp project to change in the future: either by switching to a different license, or by having staff redirected to other projects within the larger company.

Even when a project is open-source the copyright owner has complete control over it, and they can change licensing as they wish.

This has happened before with projects like Redis, Minio, and others.

I got a pretty cool AI backed discord bot I made. It went rouge(not poorly programmed) and performed over 100 searches in an hour yesterday and got black listed by many mega corporations. I'll start the bidding at 10 billion.

The beginning of the end of free access open models. Their end goals, all AI companies mixed, is to regulate AI so hard that we cant self host no more, so that we can sell our souls forever to the AI overlords which is planned to replace us.

Once chaos starts, they will retreat in their self sufficient bunkers, let AI clankers and drones to clean up chaotic citizens, until population has shrinked enough for the pedophilic elite to start living their dream life in the world they will have stolen from us.

Nvidia is seeing the writing on the wall that local models are the only viable future for AI. They have to try and squash that now before it's too late. I mean, it is already is too late, as they've hooked there wagons to these AI companies, and that shit's going to end and nividia is going to be a bag holder. I can't wait.

I hope they buy it. it will only speed up the inevitable destruction of LLMs/AI when they lock selfhosting access behind subscriptions.
