It just doesn't need to exist. The mystery of the "Space Jockey" is what makes cosmic horror work. Ridley Scott in his heart of hearts knows this. Prometheus was a heartless cash-grab.
Ridley Scott did not create Alien. Dan O'Bannon did. He even workshopped the idea with John Carpenter in Dark Star (though we could argue its origins back to 1958's "IT: The Terror from Beyond Space" as well...).
Ridley Scott was a HIRE. He has no further claim to the direction of the franchise. Just pisses me off to no end that he came in with dopey ideas that no one working on the first film would have put up with and destroyed the mystery of the franchise, and worse, connected it to Earth.
The thing I loved about the space jockey was the idea that "it's all happened before, this thing that is about to happen to you"... An extremely nasty thing from an unknown nasty place. Both the space jockey and we lifted up the wrong rock.
