Paradoxically, I'm sure the only people this will inconvenience are regular folks trying to get two tickets to a show. Scalpers will have a way to update their ticket spinners and bypass any form of verification, resulting in shows STILL being sold out 1.3 seconds after they go on sale.

Stop being right!

I think these companies are themselves in on the resell racket. Their connected bots buy them instantly when they come available, and they get a cut out of higher sale prices. At least with livenation, john oliver did a thing about it on his show.

They absolutely are because they own the resale market too and get a cut of all those sales. They don't have to actually do the scalping themselves, just not get in the way.

I'll watch the neighbours kids do a backyard "concert" before I would pay ticketmaster to see a show. Local gigs and community theatre will be making a big comeback down the road. Ticketmaster can't sustain their iron grip on venues and touring artists forever. In the meantime though it's morphed into a service for the elite and the "monied".

Community theater can be a great choice if you have them in your area. $25 for a bunch of volunteers beats out the outrageous prices charged by megacorps like Ticketmaster any day of the week. I’ve seen many quality community theater productions, and have even seen some actors who have gone on to have professional TV and movie careers.

As a kid & in my twenties I enjoyed attending community theater productions & had some friends who were on stage but as an adult I wonder how they can live spending so much time at neverending process of auditions & rehearsals & performances for NO PAY? There must be a lot of wealthy daddies keeping these people afloat.

This really feels like the bad place and they are just slowly boiling the frog.

[-] ForgottenUsername@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

This is the same company that lost half a billion customers personal and financial details. And how they want government IDs. Fk that.

It's sad how quickly the public forgets and normalises this type of behaviour by companies.

[-] daggermoon@piefed.world 28 points 4 days ago

I guess i'm getting too old for these shows anyways.

Ticketmaster is scalping too, while gathering everyone's personal data. Gonna be great for the company valuation.

[-] foggy@lemmy.world 17 points 4 days ago

100% will not ever do this for any company for any reason.

[-] anarchy79@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

This community is less „mildly infuriating“, and more „watch the US become a fascist‘s dreamland“

[-] Witchfire@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Surprise, somehow it's still Ticketmaster /s

[-] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 13 points 4 days ago

I saw this when trying to find my tickets for a concert a month ago. If they ever required this I'd just be done with concerts. Not worth trying to find concerts that don't use them, or to find ways around it.

[-] nixfreak@sopuli.xyz 10 points 4 days ago

Done with live nation and ticket master.

[-] scytale@piefed.zip 9 points 4 days ago

What happens when you select “Continue Without Verifying”? Does it lock you out of your account?

[-] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 days ago

No, it puts your account in a state where they will happily charge your credit card for tickets, but then refuse to show them to you so you can’t actually get into the show even though they took your money.

Source: this literally happened to me. Did a chargeback. Situation is still unfolding.

[-] DanceMomsSavedMe@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago

Stubhub is better. Albeit sometimes slightly more expensive. Last time I bought from them (admittedly years ago) I didn't have to show them anything except a credit card number.

And thats the motto of the world: authoritarianism.
