I really hate the premise that this is a "war" when it's actually the continuation of at least a century of imperial aggression against Iran.

edit: Did OP get banned from lemmy.world for this? Typical.

Naw I got banned from News for a small argument.

Though this is a continuation of aggression, this is Iranians people's only hope for true freedom no?

X to doubt, CNN/Brett McGurk.

Like, sure:

Wars are contests of leverage and endurance. And the contest now looks very different from even a few months ago.

But there's no real foundation given for why Iran is more exhausted than America. Yes, more is going through the straight of Hormuz, and Iran's still isn't a global economic power. But, America is mostly out of weapons, and had no public support in the first place.

The language about how Iran "chose" to attack shipping is also pretty gross. It's technically true, but the US chose to start this war, so it's not like it was unexpected, unjustified or arbitrary. There's also a part that's basically "we can do it if we just believe".

This bit is totally right, though:

A better American strategy from the start may have been an economic campaign to support the Iranian people demanding change.

"Oil is flowing" they say while our emergency oil reserves are at an all time low. "They will have a missile logistics problem" they say while our own missiles are practically depleted. "It's about endurance" as our sailors try to kill themselves. It's existential for Iran, they are not going to surrender.

Even if true, that's not necessarily a win for the US. This is the type of act that could result in a 9/11 scale terrorist attack. This will have generational effects. Even if Iran unconditionally surrenders, the US has already lost.

Maybe this is the plan, first get stuck in a war against an old enemy some time before midterm elections, fake a terrorist attack on US soil, Trump suspends elections and sends a nuke because he always wanted to. But first he tells his friends to short the market.
