Sega, Xbox, Steam - and functionally speaking, even Sony all default to a face button scheme with the action/enter/accept button on the bottom, and cancel/back on the right. Nintendo's control scheme is really the primary thing that throws a wrench in retro handheld setups. It's also just a bad layout. X on top? What is that nonsense?

I played only with Nintendo layout... My steamdeck has Nintendo layout, I'm doomed

[-] popcar2@piefed.ca 13 points 2 days ago

Hard disagree, most people play Nintendo games on retro handhelds. Retro handhelds usually emulate PS1, which also mostly had circle to accept and X to cancel (and still does in Japan). Nobody is emulating xbox games. Following what most people are playing is the right choice, and that's usually NES/SNES/N64/GBA.

For people that have only played N64 and GameCube, the A button has to be in the south/center, and then the B button somewhere to the left/below.

Nintendo messed up their own user base with the change they made for the classic gamepad in Wii. They definitely pushed me away as a user.

This right here. Nintendo is Japanese, It's the Japanese layout, just like Sony uses.

[-] AnimalsDream@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 day ago

Just like Sony uses? Circle being enter/accept and X being cancel/back was the original intention, but that got mixed up in the US almost immediately and it wasn't long before X became equivalent to A in most games in all regions even on the original ps1. For the vast majority of games, the Sony layout is effectively the same as the Xbox layout, just with idiosyncratic glyphs.

I personally LOVE the "BAXY" ( right down left up ) layout because I think it is the most logical button layout. As much as I'm not a fan of microsoft, they perfected button layout, IMO.

Retro having is about recreating the feeling of a different era. Who in the ever loving fuck are you to decide your personal opinion should be enforced on millions of people.

You are an asshole for this opinion to make everyone do what YOU want.

Do you like being like Donald Trump and the rest of the Epstein class/fundamental religious assholes, even just in this extremely minor way? Do you? Well just because you hold an opinions doesn't mean you get to enforce it on everyone else.

Go away

[-] AnimalsDream@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 day ago

Uh, the fuck is wrong with you?

[-] Jarix@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago

You are. I thought that was obvious

[-] AnimalsDream@slrpnk.net 1 points 15 hours ago

Judging by your unhinged comment, it sounds like you are very much your own problem.

[-] Jarix@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago

Someone disagrees with you so they are unhinged. Great come back, gonna call me a doodoo head next like the 4 year old you are?

Nintendo was first with the SNES controller.

[-] aceslip@lemmy.zip 9 points 2 days ago

First doesn’t mean best

Nintendo was first with the NES. And by that I mean that on the NES controller, you have to move your thumb the same direction (counter-clockwise) to get from A to B as you do on the SNES. So I count that as precedent.

But yeah. Your point stands. The rest of the industry just decided to screw up the standard long ago.

(If Nintendo had "A" and "B" buttons on any Game & Watch systems Before the NES, I'm unaware.)

You're right, we should abolish sticks and shoulder buttons

[-] Wfh@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

Meanwhile I opened my RGCubeXX to swap AB/XY. Which means I had to swap the buttons at the OS level. Which means I regularly have to swap back buttons in game.

Still worth it tho.

[-] FinalRemix@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

My 406s let me just toggle layout in the drop-down bar. How difficult is it on the Linux models?

[-] Wfh@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

On MuOS, it's as simple as toggling "button swap" in the general settings.

[-] FinalRemix@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Ooh, awesome. I already use muOS on my... whatever number it is

I don't personally care as much about "industry" or standards that i care about history and preservation. For me (and i wouldn't push this on anyone), a mobile console is a gameboy, and my favourite console ever is the SNES (among others... who said PCEngine?? ;) ) so i appreciate that.

I am all in favour of having controllers that would have several options through. Like the 8bitdo pro allows for different buttons schemes...

[-] ISolox@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

IDC which way it goes but it would be nice to standardize it.

[-] CardboardDecoy@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

I kinda wanna know why they stopped doing the ting at the beginning of switch 1 where the glyphs were just the 4 face buttons with the one(s) you pressed highlighted. Maybe on handheld depending on resolution that's not as recognizable but I was like hey, that's pretty universal and uncontestable.

[-] SteposVenzny@beehaw.org 2 points 2 days ago

Confirm being on the right is more retro, though. Nintendo is the way they are because they didn’t change. Surely it makes sense for a retro handheld to use retro controls?

[-] veeesix@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

If you consider that the more comfortable position to place your thumbs on the right side of a controller are at the edges (e.g. on a SNES controller it’s dpad-left and A) it makes sense that the A button should be on the right (i.e. the first button from the perspective of your right hand).

[-] AnimalsDream@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 days ago

Faulty premise, I do not consider the right side to be more comfortable. If it were up to me, A would be bottom, and B would be left, because in a lot of games B tends to be attack and A either jump or some dodge roll. That setup makes it convenient to place the thumb over both buttons simultaneously.
