Wait, can Canadians join the US military?

[-] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 3 points 17 hours ago

I'm not sure there is a U.S. military anymore. I think it morphed into the trump/epstein private army. Semper Tweens! Don't forget though, just like there are innocent citizens apart from trump/epstein there are also innocent soldiers apart from trump/epstein.

More concerned about the number of Canadians who have served in the IDF.

[-] Canconda@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 day ago

Yea they'd better get the same treatment as those dipshits that joined ISIS.

[-] HugeNerd@lemmy.ca 1 points 13 hours ago

You mean our greatest and democratic ally in Syria?

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 20 points 1 day ago

How many Canadians think US citizens should not be MPs or run for Prime Minister?

[-] Corvid_Moon@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

111%! That is the most absurd thing I've ever heard of politically. No one who holds citizenship of a foreign country should ever be permitted to work in politics in Canada.

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 3 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

There is no requirement for MPs to declare their citizenship status.

There is no requirement of NFP think tanks to declare how much money they get from foreign sources.

Scheer is a particular cunt. When running for PM he said he was in process of renouncing his US citizenship, which is a lie. He was 2025 party leader again.

As US citizen, he also has to pay US income taxes, so what is his incentive to keep his US citizenship?

[-] Corvid_Moon@lemmy.ca 1 points 14 hours ago

I hope there can be a petition or something to change that, because it seems like a huge vulnerability for us.

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 13 hours ago

Liberals have done nothing to address this. How many MPs are US citizens? Why is this secret?

What do we allow Atlas and Koch to fund propaganda machines in Canada? Then, give them tax free status?

[-] HugeNerd@lemmy.ca 1 points 13 hours ago

He's got dual citizenship ffs

[-] Corvid_Moon@lemmy.ca 2 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

As the US is becoming more and more adversarial toward Canada, being a US citizen in Canadian politics becomes more and more of a liability to our institutional integrity as a country.

Those who hold citizenship of an enemy nation should not be permitted to make decisions about this country, especially not while we are at war with that nation.

With the current state of affairs?

Serving in the US military should be considered treason.

[-] MyVeryRealName@lemmy.world -1 points 17 hours ago

That's just mean

[-] SpicyLizards@reddthat.com 30 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I couldn't imagine the outcome if i randomly joined a foreign military, especially a hostile one.

Its amazing that is even a thing. Canada has been too nice to the worst of neighbours for too long.

This is ignoring the current situation with the US/Izrael genocide forces.

[-] Sunshine@piefed.ca 13 points 1 day ago

Who would serve a banana republic that runs the abusive Guantanamo Bay

[-] ZDL@lazysoci.al 4 points 1 day ago

Ever heard of the Wildrose Party? That's almost half a million right there. With their replacements, the United Conservatives, that number likely ramps up higher.

[-] tangeli@piefed.social 7 points 2 days ago

How would that work in practice? Cancel citizenship if you serve in US/Israeli/foreign military? Arrest and fines or prison, if you return to Canada after serving in one of them? If it was illegal, what would the enforcement be and what would the penalties be? The question is too abstract.

I don't disagree that serving in the U.S. military at the moment should be considered treason, and probably also terrorism. Serving in some others should be considered terrorism, at least.

[-] otter@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

As per the article, we already have laws about this. It just doesn't come up that often.

Under the Foreign Enlistment Act, Canadians are only prohibited from fighting for non-state forces, designated terrorist organizations and militaries of states that are at war with a Canadian ally.

Punishment

14 Any person who is guilty of an offence under this Act is liable

(a) on summary conviction, to a fine not exceeding five hundred dollars or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding twelve months, with or without hard labour, or to both fine and imprisonment; or

(b) on conviction on indictment, to a fine not exceeding two thousand dollars or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, with or without hard labour, or to both fine and imprisonment.

Along with other consequences, I didn't have a chance to read it all. I would imagine that they'd also face:

  • losing security clearances
  • criminal charges related to spying/sabotage
[-] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 3 points 14 hours ago

That fine and jail term are severely out of balance.

I suspect it hasn't been amended to keep the punitive nature of the fine more in line with the imprisonment for many decades.

Treason is a separate offense under the criminal code

Treason

(2) Every one who commits an offence under subsection (1) is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding fourteen years.

Sabotage

52 (1) Every person is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term of not more than 10 years or is guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction who does a prohibited act with the intent to endanger

Sabotage — essential infrastructure

52.1 (1) Every person is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term of not more than 10 years or is guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction who interferes with access to an essential infrastructure or causes an essential infrastructure to be lost, inoperable, unsafe or unfit for use with the intent to

Sabotage — device

52.2 (1) Every person commits an offence who makes, possesses, sells or distributes a device intending that it be used or knowing that it will be used, in whole or in part, to carry out an offence under subsection 52(1) or 52.1(1).

(a) is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term of not more than 10 years; or

Pointing this out because working for terrorists is less severe than working against Canada as defined by law.

If dual citizen get Canadian citizenship revoked. Not sure about single citizenship arrest them if they come back to Canada I guess.

[-] atro_city@fedia.io 3 points 1 day ago

That would require Canada officially admitting that the US is an enemy. It won't do that.

[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

Just officially until our army is strong enough. Otherwise it’s just the “enemy”

[-] Honytawk@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 day ago

No, they could just think any soldier should be illegal. Doesn't matter the country.

[-] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago

Could you expand on that? Like how you came to that conclusion at all.

[-] lazynooblet@lazysoci.al 1 points 1 day ago

Not that I agree, but I interpret it as legislation to ban serving in any foreign military, else you lose citizenship. Would be a bit harsh.

[-] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 day ago

Yeah, that doesn't track.

Americans have a moral obligation to resist Donald Trump and project 2025 at every turn.

America is a flawed democracy currently being ruled by oligarchs. Stop the backslide! Dont let America become the next Hungary.

America needs to challenge the court rulings of citizens united v. fec and shelby county v. holder, protect the media, implement independent district drawing, and the single transferable vote so they don't end up having people stay home in life-changing elections because they cannot vote for their favourite candidate.
