I actually think of this often, if more and more people self host and go to Linux etc the big bois are gonna crack down and make it illegal, or infiltrate distros and repos with bad actors.

2035 bingo card: Linux and a nas makes you a terrorist. In America, this will surely happen.

Phew! Lucky my home server runs FreeBSD then....

With it having a logo of a devil (demon? daemon?) you must be even more eviler!

I know right

[-] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

I'm safe with TempleOS.

When they make Linux illegal then only outlaws will use it.

[-] OwOarchist@pawb.social 7 points 1 month ago

Or ... they'll just buy up all the hardware (including all production capacity for future hardware), making it prohibitively expensive for people to buy their own hardware.

That and try to pass laws forbidding the continued usage of older computers, since a lot of older tech can still work with Linux well enough.

Yeah the freedom to vote with your wallet in a capitalist market is just an illusion. You have no choice but to do what they say and I don't think we can self-host and open-source our way out of it. Needs systemic change.

There is nothing to worry about if you're only hosting FOSS. Which you are, right?

[-] kibblebits@quokk.au 10 points 1 month ago

Except dependency injection.

[-] JPAKx4@lemmy.blahaj.zone 15 points 1 month ago

Or corporate control over distros using donations.

[-] OwOarchist@pawb.social 12 points 1 month ago

Or AI tech bros buying up literally ALL the hardware, leaving none for you.

I’ve said it before and it just seems to be getting more obvious that they want us all on thin-client-like PCs with subscriptions for any service that requires actual computing power - streaming your games over something like GeForce NOW. Best case scenario, you’re allowed to rent a PC at exorbitant rates with somewhat decent hardware.

Or, and maybe this is just showing my age, if you make it too hard, I will just go without a computer.

Like the caveman I apparently am.

[-] Confused_Emus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 month ago

The Luddites were right all along.

[-] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 7 points 1 month ago

They actually really were if you read their points. Technological advances are so often pushed on people as a power grab by the wealthy

[-] TeaWithDani@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Rent or finance, just like a car.

[-] HerbGrower@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 month ago

You can buy cars too.

Get stuff second hand and it isn't even that expensive. Performance per £ is still better than it was a decade ago for the overall system.
