US military officials say they have disabled advertising trackers on a range of phones and computers, according to letters released on Friday by the US senator Ron Wyden and statements given to Reuters.

The development follows reports that commercially available location data had been used to target American forces in the Middle East.

The air force told Wyden it disabled the advertising identifiers on computers and mobile phones two months ago. US Special Operations Command said in a separate letter that it had “recently” disabled them on its Windows devices. The army told Reuters that advertising IDs tied to mobile devices had been disabled since earlier this year.

Targeted ads are once again not just a nuisance, but a security risk.

People in communities like this have been blocking connections to advertising and tracking networks for over a decade, how the hell did the US fucking military not figure out what a problem that could be until this year??

Someone should let those officials know that disabling and or refusing trackers is yet another way of tracking.

On troop's personal phones, or on government issued equipment?

Do you have a family member or friend serving in the military, and do you prefer sending handwritten letters or messages online? Staying in touch while someone is deployed can mean a lot, and Sandboxx reviews helps people send letters to service members. Its PissedConsumer reviews can also give you an idea of other users’ experiences with delivery times and the service.
