Um, why is age verification needed at all in any personal OS?
A question for the ages...
A question about your ages.
A question about your pages
Won't someone please think of the children?!
Of whom we require photographs... for reasons.
The rough idea is that services like social media, apps, etc. don't want to have to implement age verification and be held liable if they get it wrong. Instead, their preference is that the OS just tell them what age category to use and then they trust it.
IMO setting my age once during account creation sounds 100x better than having to scan my face and ID for every online service I use, so if I have to choose between these options I actually prefer the OS one. Probably though we'll get both - i.e. OS will want our age AND online services will expect our ID.
So they can data breach it with no reprocuaions.

"This is great news!"
Is what I said when this was news a week ago and extremely widely posted...
Age verification is evil. We need to take this and run with it
Operating system open source exemption, but not open source app exemption
Ok, that’s it. Asahi project, I hope you get to the M4 chip soon, and I gotta figure out how to got Photoshop, illustrator and InDesign running on Linux. :/
It’s been real, macOS, but if you card me, I can only say “fuck you”
Edit: and for all of those kind souls who wish to offer me Adobe alternatives: as a professional who has to use these Adobe apps everyday: they are really is no alternative. But thank you very much for your effort.
However, anyway, if you can help me to get any Adobe cc apps running in Linux, I will be eternally grateful— grateful enough to reveal how I’ve been getting them for free for 35 years. (it’s stupidly, easy, so easy that I don’t want to publish it and expose my loophole)
But it is both super easy and super legal— I found an easy and reliable way to game the free trial system. and I have been using it for decades.
I haven't tried this yet myself, but it's a project I've been keeping a fairly anticipatory eye on: https://github.com/PhialsBasement/wine-adobe-installers/
Oooo! Now that’s some hot shit
Isn't there some BSD stuff in Macs? Is it enough to get the exemption?
Sadly no. macOS (or, more specifically, NeXTSTEP) was originally based on BSD, but it has its own proprietary microkernel (Mach, now called Darwin), making it different enough that it is no longer considered a BSD distro (more like a sibling nowadays), despite being fully POSIX-compliant and UNIX certified.
In 1996, Apple Computer acquired NeXT and used NeXTSTEP and OPENSTEP as the foundation for Mac OS X (later macOS). Its technologies continue to form the basis of Darwin, the core operating system underlying macOS, iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, and tvOS.
It might be interesting to see if Apple attempts to slide in under that exemption anyway, but I doubt they would even try.
ignore the entire ecosystem of "professionals" who don't use adobe. like maybe it's true with your clients or whatever that you have to use adobe, but it's not a function of you being more "professional" than other people, shove that.
I don’t have to ignore them. I can just make $300,000 less per year. But I’d really rather not. There are those who pay me, and those who don’t. after all, I have a job to do.
The decision is pretty simple and pretty binary. Either I use professional software and get paid accordingly, or I use the software of children and LOSE MY JOB AND NEVER GET ANOTHER PROFESSIONAL DESIGN JOB.
I can use Adobe software and make the big bux and work with professionals, or I can use children’s FOSS software and struggle to find work and get paid nothing. that’s just how it is.
Anyone who tells you differently is lying to you.
software of children
children’s FOSS software
Just gonna blatantly disrespect all the incredibly hard-working and brilliant people who not only use, but also develop open source tools? On Lemmy? Lol
Dunno homie, you sure you want to run your Big Boy Pants(TM) solely-viable professional corpo-rental big-bux ware on a "children's" operating system? Careful, you might not get paid!
Sincerely glad you're making it under current conditions in the creative field though. That's great.
But also it's a small world. If your wealthy moneybags masters demand proprietary shit, that's fine. We gotta get our bread.
But don't go trashing everybody else or their hard work. That's not gonna earn you any good will here nor anywhere else.
Anyway, there seems to be progress being made in this direction: https://www.xda-developers.com/someone-finally-got-the-adobe-cc-installers-working-on-linux-with-wine/
Best of luck to you.
lol that’s a lot of words for “I have no clue what I’m talking about“
There’s always some idiot who will argue. It’s always an idiot who’s never worked in the industry, and will never work in the industry. You sound like some Facebook Karen, lecturing an immunologist about how vaccines are some sort of “government conspiracy“.
You’re wrong.
And you’re gonna die wrong. And poor, without a job in the design world.
No matter how much you kick and scream and cry, you’re never gonna get a job in the design industry unless you use Adobe products. Lie to yourself all you like, you’re just fucking wrong.
Nobody wants your kiddie software, and no one will ever pay you unless you use the big boy stuff

If you notice, I never even argued open source vs Adobe. Use what you like.
My argument is "Plenty of talented people, even in your industry, build FOSS that millions use. Doesn't always have to be for profit. TL;DR: don't be a dick."
You condemn open source software as "kiddie tools" and "children's software" but the root of your thread is "plz help me run muh adobes in Linux." It was fine. Then you started raging at hypothetical "attackers" like some cracked out bum.
I'm just surprised even if Macs start checking IDs you wouldn't be advocating for them as the only way to get anything useful and profitable done, since freely available software is allegedly clearly so inferior and unprofessional.
Also I tried to help you out anyway with that link.
Good luck, have fun, enjoy all your money you like talking about lol.
If you notice
All I notice is that you keep coming back with your crybaby tantrums. I’m not even reading your comments anymore. Get the hell over yourself.
lol
I wonder if launching the photoshop installer in proton on steam would work
Well… starting with the Creative Cloud installer would the place to start, I suppose….
Is it the right direction if you'll be unable to visit websites without having OS age verification?
Websites not worth visiting IMO
