We need to remove some of the links from the fediverse logo to show all the defederations

[-] AnalogAllamma@lemmy.world 30 points 1 week ago

What's the symbol on the left?

[-] Natanox@discuss.tchncs.de 109 points 1 week ago

The Fediverse / ActivityPub. The thing Lemmy is part of, where you're currently in.

[-] ztwhixsemhwldvka@lemmy.world 70 points 1 week ago

Wait where am I? I took a left turn awhile back. Went past some Marxists and Linux users and ended up here.

[-] Natanox@discuss.tchncs.de 61 points 1 week ago

You're part of a very, very large international polycule.

[-] gandalf_der_13te@feddit.org 5 points 1 week ago

The tankies she told you not to worry about.

[-] birdwing@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 week ago

Hi, it's the Marxist you saw! o/ waves as you go past by

[-] AnalogAllamma@lemmy.world 28 points 1 week ago

Ahhh thanks. I'm still very new to all this.

That icon is much more noticeable using the web browser UI, appearing next to every post and every comment (clicking it goes to the home instance where the content came from), though 3rd-party apps substitute that with their own provided experience.

Like iirc Voyager has it upon the app startup but it's grey not colored like this, and I don't typically start Voyager from scratch but rather just pop it back up for as long as possible, so that startup screen is rarely visited.

I've been using Boost for Lemmy

[-] OpenStars@discuss.online 2 points 1 week ago

I hear that was a good one, but never tried it. Maybe I am confusing it with another one (like Connect and/or Sync, though I historically have not cared about 3rd-party apps) but I thought it wasn't being updated for a long time - yet its last update was just last month so not a worry now (if it ever was)!

Same as the one on the right:

[-] gandalf_der_13te@feddit.org 14 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

bluesky (or rather the underlying protocol, ATProto) is not actually decentralized. all public identity keys (signature keys) reside with a single entity (some non-profit organization in switzerland, PLC). if they get hacked, the hackers can forge any identity they want to.

only the messages and media files are stored decentralized, and the user profile personal information (profile picture, bio, etc). but not the crucial signature keys.

[-] blackjam_alex@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

So it only exists to outsource the costs.

[-] dillekant@slrpnk.net 11 points 1 week ago

Sadly, I think Fedi made the bridge.

[-] birdwing@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 week ago

Not all of them. Blåhaj excludes all of Threads. I'm not sure about Bluesky or Mastodon, but haven't seen posts from there yet.

[-] dillekant@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 week ago

A lot of instances exclude Threads, but I think the bridgy is not built by the Bluesky folks, it's built by the community.

[-] luciferofastora@feddit.org 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Check your instance's instance list to see what you are and aren't linked with. For lemmy instances, it's usually domain/instances, such as https://slrpnk.net/instances for yours.

Looks like slrpnk is linked to the bsky and indieweb bridges at brid.gy

[-] OpenStars@discuss.online 3 points 1 week ago

Lemmy.World and my home instance Discuss.Online both federate with fed.brid.gy, but I've never once seen any content from there and from everything that I read it seems that federation is more or less irrelevant here - necessary but nowhere close to sufficient to make the interconnection happen.

"For the purpose of whatever's about to happen next, yes we're friends"

[-] Pollo_Jack@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

I want to like BlueSky but my feeds are either super political or gay. It's totally fine to have gay shit there but a filter would be neat.

[-] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

I enjoy me some gay shit. But at a point... I just want to not be horny. And blue sky disagrees with that.

[-] BuboScandiacus@mander.xyz 4 points 1 week ago

Bluesky feeds have either porn, politics or both

[-] AVincentInSpace@pawb.social 2 points 1 week ago

I mean that's true of Mastodon also but most of those users are people who are at least one of trans, therian, or programmers, meaning they actually have brains in their heads

[-] BuboScandiacus@mander.xyz 2 points 5 days ago

I don’t see the link between being part of either of those groups and being smart

[-] chewypoops@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Forget the BS instances argument everyone keeps having.

The question I ask the ATProto folks is this: Explain how, if Bluesky went out of business tomorrow, the network keeps running without disruption.

I know that it can keep working, but unlike the Fediverse, it won't happen smoothly like if a major instance shuddered and people had to migrate. Bluesky holds the whole thing together in a way that impedes good decentralization.
