Oh that's messed up.
It shows that one person's pure joy can be oppressive to others. And that a child's innocence and whimsy is the only way. But, that those things are directly responsible for the lack of them in those who have lost their own whimsy in a zero-sum system of happiness.
Bleak.
I remember as a kid having the ability to wake up early. Yesterday, I had to wake up before 7am to meet some people and I think my whole week is ruined.
Is this indeed something that is now lost for new generations, waking up in the morning to eat cereal and watch cartoons on tv? It seems to me even in my now third ass world country nobody does that anymore
Also dad “having to” go to the office on the weekend just to get out of being a dad.
That definitely still happens.
Also why golf courses exist.
I love hanging out with my 8 y/o on days off, but a bunch of the dads of his classmates waste at least half a day every weekend chasing balls around.
Golf is so weird. "What is the thinnest veneer of red-blooded outdoorsy competition that we can slap onto socially exclusive drinking and socializing?" With carts and mobile drink service (generally always young and female) there's not even the burden of actually walking anywhere or schlepping your own hydration (or your "hydration").
I haven't played in twenty years, and only about 5 times total. I didn't even hate it the game itself, but it's such a bizarrely huge and wasteful infrastructure to build around what's basically bowling night for rich people. I guess really the extravagance is the point, with token efforts at public courses and community outreach to provide socialization for the ever-so-slightly upwardly mobile, and to scrub some of the elitist stink off.
I have definitely went to work on a day I could have had off because my kids and wife were off work. I figured if my wife was home anyways and I wouldn't be able to relax, I might as well make some money.
If you need the money that's one thing, and honestly if you could just use the money and you get a lot of quality time with your kids then that's cool too.
Most of us, however, have occasionally run across people who either actively dislike spending time with their kids, or who get pathological about one more dollar, due either to childhood issues they haven't worked through or just to their being assholes.
Sounds like you might be in a rut. Best to head those off early before it all falls apart.
Not being able to relax in your own home while your family is present, is not normal.
I have since moved to a house about double the size, with a lot more to do for kids.

About this community and how I post the comic strip… The comics are posted in chronological order on the day (usually) they were released. Posting them to match the release date adds a bit of fun and nostalgia to match the experience of reading them in the newspaper for first time. Many moons ago, I would ask my Dad to save the newspaper for me everyday so I could read my favorite comic strips. It really sucked when I missed a day. Only years later, when I got the books was I able to catch up on the missed strips.
