In 2000 users on airliner's message board discussed what would happen if an airliner crashed into the World Trade Center.

You can still view the discussion here.

IIRC the FBI did investigate and determined no foul play, nor were any of the terrorist involved in this post in any way. Just a coincidence.

Coincidences are common when you scale up to billions of people

If you think that's a coincidence, you should watch the pilot episode of The Lone Gunmen.

It's really just lazy writing. The WTC was attacked in 1993 so it was well known to be a target. Plus you had the OKC bombing a few years later which just confirmed that government structures were targets. Flying planes into stuff wasn't a new idea either; the earliest cruise missiles were basically jets with some remote controls added to them and even suicide-pilots were an old idea by then (kamikaze's in WW2.) And the idea of a plane crashing into the WTC wasn't even that novel before the 1993 attack. There were numerous experts criticizing the possibility of a jet accidentally crashing into them when approaching the nearby airport, so much so they eventually tweaked the flight-lanes around Manhattan to limit the chance of an airliner hitting them in bad fog.

So to have a plot about some jerk remotely flying a jet into a famous skyscraper that had already been attacked once before isn't all that surprising.

As the director of security for the financial services firm Morgan Stanley at the World Trade Center,[3] Rescorla anticipated attacks on the towers and implemented evacuation procedures that were credited with saving thousands of lives.[4] He died during the attacks of September 11, 2001, going back to help evacuate more people in the South Tower after he had organized the evacuation of the Morgan Stanley offices.

There was also reports that the FBI had anticipated the possibility of terrorist using explosive-laden jets to attack the towers but they assumed they'd use smaller private jets like gulf-streams and would use 4 or so to hit the towers. After 1993 lots of people knew the towers were a target. Lots of people that fled the towers on 9/11 had worked there during the 1993 bombing and instinctively knew something was off and they needed to get out of them ASAP.
