They have also inflated their price by the same amount, you know.

Tap for spoiler/s

[-] Rhaedas@fedia.io 51 points 3 weeks ago

It's because they're having to pay the actors and writers and directors more, right?

Right?

[-] couldhavebeenyou@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 weeks ago

Run less of a deficit

[-] Amuro_eat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 42 points 3 weeks ago

It went down for me cos I said fuck it and pirate everything now. Praise Jellyfin

[-] Dultas@lemmy.world 11 points 3 weeks ago

How I justify my home lab costs. Even though I could run it much slimmer.

[-] Amuro_eat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah I’ve gone down to just paying $10 a month for a seedbox. I’ve kept my homelab costs extremely low cos I really just use it for jellyfin currently. The costs will grow though cos I’ve inadvertently really gotten into networking now but at least that’s more productive than burning my money on endlessly rising subscription fees

A rising tide drowns all swimmers.

[-] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 34 points 3 weeks ago

So get on the boat. 🏴‍☠️

[-] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 12 points 3 weeks ago

We're gonna need a bigger boat...

[-] gndagreborn@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago

I started looking for more HDDs to add to my NAS and the pricing made my blood run cold.

[-] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 5 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, my advice would always be to buy used enterprise-grade drives with SMART reports. Data center drives get swapped out for minor issues, or just for operating hours with no issues. Plenty of life left in them for home lab use, especially if you're running something like TrueNAS with active health monitoring and load balancing.

[-] whats_a_lemmy@midwest.social 2 points 3 weeks ago

What's a good place to buy these in small lots? Or does it not matter to use a mismash of individually purchased drives for NAS purposes?

[-] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 3 points 3 weeks ago

I usually buy on eBay.

For RAID it's more important to use matched drives, but this is one of the reasons I avoid RAID, it's basically legacy technology with few real benefits. ZFS is better, or btrfs. With ZFS on TrueNAS in particular, drive pools are managed very competently and there's no need to match models or age or anything, with the only caveat being that if drives are mirrored, the size will be limited by the smallest drive. You can even mix drive speeds within a pool, the system will adjust read/write load balancing to meet the drive specs.

Don't use RAID, use a modern drive pooling system.

You're welcome. Just try to get a SMART report before you buy the drive, and do a little reading so you understand what the report is telling you. If you can't get a report beforehand, definitely run smartctl soon after you get it, and get a refund if the condition is unusable or doesn't match the seller's description.

[-] Dultas@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

I'm slowly migrating to used SAS drives since my NAS supports it.

[-] wolfeh@lemmy.blahaj.zone 25 points 3 weeks ago

My Jellyfin server's monthly fee went up 70% too. What's 70% of zero, again?

technically your server's monthly fee is however much you spend on electricity for it

[-] Ilandar@lemmy.today 6 points 3 weeks ago

Which could still be zero for some people.

[-] Jiral@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

It is never zero, unless you steal it. If you produce it yourself it costs you depreciation of your equipment (ie you had previous investments)

[-] myyass@lemmy.world 20 points 3 weeks ago

You know what hasn't increased? Me spending on streaming services.

[-] reddig33@lemmy.world 13 points 3 weeks ago

And are subscriptions going down? 🤔

[-] anon_8675309@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago

Arrrrr ye still streaming!?

[-] SeeMarkFly@lemmy.ml 8 points 3 weeks ago

The bay that bad boats stay hasn't changed...yet.

[-] mikenurre@lemmy.world 15 points 3 weeks ago

Sometimes it's EZ to watch TV or X if you go . TO the right place

[-] darkmogool@feddit.org 8 points 3 weeks ago

🏴‍☠️

[-] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

That's weird, I still pay 3.49 or something a month.

[-] jackintosh@feddit.nl 3 points 3 weeks ago

That’s about tree fiddy!

[-] minorkeys@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 weeks ago

Everything is going up! Why don't you write an article about why and whose at fault and how we can stop them?

[-] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

They'll raise to the maximum that people will pay. Stop paying and they'll stop raising.

[-] Crackhappy@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

Pfft. My jellyfin subscription increased by 4,437% in the same period. I am outraged.

[-] GarboDog@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

Aw man haven’t looked at streaming prices in a bit. Oof that’s expensive

[-] cobysev@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

The only streaming service I still have is Curiosity Stream, which is basically Netflix for documentaries. I have their most expensive plan (Smart Bundle Annual) and it's only $6.67/mo.

Anything else I want to watch, I sail the digital seas and load up my Plex server with the bounty.

[-] Lon3star@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Think of the shareholders

[-] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 3 weeks ago

People still pay for streaming?

[-] adhdsergio@lemmy.world 0 points 3 weeks ago

Cable is much more expensive

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

also the seasons only being 8-10episodes each(most with poor writing, acting in later seasons), and 1-2 years in between season doesnt justify the cost anyways.

[-] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

That's why I stick to Gem and Kanopy.

Although I don't use them much, either.
