OTOH tho, it's generally considered adequate to ask the owner first if the dog can be approached. Not all will react well to a stranger.

I mean... you certainly could yell "hi" to the dog from a few meters away but... normally you do approach the people (or dogs) you want to talk with to a comfortable distance...

Haha, this reminds me of this that I've had saved on my phone for a while from who knows where:

I say "sup dawg" to every single dog I meet.
If the owner chooses to interact in any way, no problemo. But my only concern is saying hi to the dog.
I usually say 'hey buddy.'
