Imagine being a fly and then having to walk dark hallways fighting demons.

I find it disturbing

It's a digital simulation, there is no fly. A neural network, just like how an LLM is a digital neural network. It will never be alive or conscious, there is no mechanism for that.

Besides, the model is missing weights so it's not even a proper simulation.

[-] Frettchen@lemmy.world 1 points 16 minutes ago

How do you know? What is the mechanism in you?

[-] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 21 points 1 day ago

Must go deeper.

Model fly brain out of Redstone. Play minecraft on that.

[-] InGodWeThrust@lemmy.zip 2 points 22 hours ago

Or fashion a working fly brain from redstone in Minecraft and make it fly

Elder dragon vs redstone fly

[-] sunbeam60@feddit.uk 15 points 1 day ago

I find this deeply unethical.

[-] brillotti@lemmy.world 8 points 14 hours ago

None of the neurons have weights attached, meaning the signals aren't processed in any way that would support consciousness.

Regardless, now imagine having Bad Apple rendered on your neurons by an Eldritch God.

[-] kogasa@programming.dev 23 points 1 day ago

You shouldn't. It's just a neural net shaped like a fly brain. There's no biochemistry simulation past that.

[-] sunbeam60@feddit.uk 2 points 23 hours ago

Eventually we can reduce the human brain down to this. Is it ethical to use that blueprint for experiments? We’ve got to be better than this, I hope. And it has to start before we get there.

[-] kogasa@programming.dev 9 points 22 hours ago

No, we can't. The biochemistry needs to be there. The fly brain is a discretized abstract model of the fly brain with none of the weights it would need to be an actual (discretized abstract) model.

whatever simulation its in, it would be the only "reality" it knows. With no knowledge of anything else its in best reality it "knows" of, provided its even possible to have anything else going on beyond actions made by computer that are based on some nebulous ruleset that the fruitfly brain runs on.

We spent decades mapping 166,000 neurons and the internet immediately made the fly play Doom, trade Bitcoin and parallel park. Honestly, that’s the most human possible response to a neuroscience breakthrough. Give us the map of a brain and within 48 hours someone will ask whether it can run Doom. Next milestone: the fly gets a LinkedIn account.

How long until we're searching for the hidden porn folder on the fruitfly brain PC?

[-] username_1@discuss.tchncs.de 35 points 1 day ago

Expected salary: a droplet of sugary water per day.

[-] halfwaythere@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

That's 15-30 drops of sugar water. Aint nobody able to afford that!

[-] DampSquid@feddit.uk 3 points 1 day ago

In this economy!?

[-] RepleteLocum@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 day ago

Isn't the issue that we don't know how and why neurons fire? We can scan the brain all we want, but if we don't know how it actually works, then it doesn't matter.

[-] SamuraiBeandog@lemmy.world 30 points 1 day ago

Any fly brain that digital can't fly... all they know is play Doom, trade bitcoin, cut doner kebab and lie.

[-] Womble@piefed.world 8 points 1 day ago

Brain rot comes for us all, human or fly.

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 23 points 1 day ago

Roko's Basilisk is actually just people on the internet making a simulation of your brain play Doom.

Well at least that’s a version of hell you can win
