Darts is not a sport. Period.

Not a physical sport. Sporting/sportsmanship centers around the competitive nature of the event, not how physical it is.

I grew up playing all the "real" sports. I get the pushback, but at the end of the day if there is an opponent, even if that opponent is yourself, it's a sporting event.

Everything can be a sport.

Well, everyone has their own view on what is a sport and what isn’t. Your view is perfectly fine for yourself, just as mine is perfectly fine for me. You say it’s a sport, I say it’s not. It’s simply a matter of opinion/preference

I dont think its a sport, just saying by definition its a sport.

I agree mostly, But I do think it’s gratuitous of people to say ‘by definition’ because who gets to set the definition? The definition of something like sport is not an indefatigable universal truth, it’s only coz some bloke somewhere in history said ‘this is the definition of sport’ and some other people went along with it, but we can make definitions also. Thats why I don’t agree with people who say ‘it’s a sport and you have to call it a sport coz others say it is’ (I don’t mean you by that, but the people en masse.) My point is: the definition of sport, whether corporations like it or not, is a matter of opinion/personal preference. Anyone can call what they want a sport or not personally to them if they decide so. We shouldn’t care about the ‘definition’, unless you agree with that particular definition. What I’m saying is, have your own mind.

In this case I was leaning more on the dictionary but I do tend to agree with your overall sentiment.

Thanks. And Again, someone wrote the dictionary. That doesn’t mean we have to agree with their definition — it may be the ‘accepted’ one (not sure by who), but I guess you get what I mean.

Precision Sports (like Billiard, Pool, Snooker, Darts, Shooting, Archery, Golf, ...) are still Sports.

I used to have a similar opinion about what things should or shouldn't count as sports. I took a course in college about sports and I learned that there are actually legal ramifications to whether we call things a sport or not. For instance, there are people who might not want to call cheerleading a sport, but if it is not, then schools are not required to provide adequate protection (like pads for falling) for them. I think we can agree that there is definitively a possibility of getting hurt in cheerleading and so equipment like that should be available.

[-] platypode@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago

That to me speaks more of a failing in the legal system than anything else, though cheerleading in particular is 100% a sport.

Darts is at least physical, chess is not a sport. It's a game.

What about pool/snooker/billiards?

Pool? No Snooker? No Billiards? Mmm… I’m on the ledge about that one

I’m with OP on this one.

In my view, sports are games where pure physicality (speed/power/endurance) confers a major advantage. All physical games reward coordination and precision, but I would only call the subset of those that also reward physicality sports.

I can agree with this. Golf is not a sport, either.

Same with swimming and soccer
