It comes after the UK's entry Look Mum No Computer came last in May's final, scoring just one point.

Brits need to chill the fuck out when it comes to Eurovision. It's a contest where you're judged by the community, so when you're routinely dicks to your neighbours you're gonna lose... a lot. It has very little to do with the act on stage.

If that’s true, how did Israel win?

[-] ViatorOmnium@piefed.social 21 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

They have a sizeable group of supporters in lots of European countries that will vote on them and no one else no matter what. There's also a large group that will not vote on them no matter what, but that group splits the vote between all the other contestants. So in general, Israel benefits from the polarisation.

The Israeli government also invests in marketing to encourage its citizens to vote in Eurovision.

Didnt they get second place?

[-] tacosanonymous@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 month ago

That’s way better than they should have. They didn’t win the last one but I think there was a pretty recent one.

How has the UK been routinely dicks? We never won when we were in the EU either.

It was always seen as a bit naff, and no credible artists ever wanted anything to do with it.

Afghanistan and Iraq? Already dominating music industry? Being rubbish at languages because they all speak ours? Even in the EU, we were "Extrawurst" all the time. Denominating finance (partly with dark money).

Even before Brexit, we made ourselves unpopular.

The UK/bbc is also one of the major funders so it gets an automatic place in the final. So merit is not nessassery in the opening.

He is but I think the scales need rebalanced to allow the UK to not make it into the final. And actually work for the final.

As a Look Mum No Computer fan, I feel personally attacked

[-] jabjoe@feddit.uk 6 points 1 month ago

Yeah, I think the problem isn't always our entries. Look Mum No Computer was fun and kind of smart and cheeky. Kraftwerk inspired. It should have done better.

Sam Ryder is so exceptional the anti-British settlement feel away. His character and voice talent shines so bright.

He was not a good fit for that kind of politically charged event. Moreover I doubt he will ever become mainstream or moving large crowds. And again, I've been following him for years, have had to cross borders to see him play live.

Alot of previous winners haven't had mainstream apeal. Some odd acts have done rather well. I suspect that he didn't have the support he needed from the BBC or the prep work needed for a performance. He made his own set witch is typical Sam. He should have outsourced more to other people so he could control the overall picture and so he wasn't fixing the set before he got on stage. The fact that he was on his own after a performance was indicative of what support he was getting.

I wonder if the humour of the song wasn't coming over well in the other cultures. That the Kraftwerk mock styling was done with love. Maybe many thought we were just taking the piss, not of ourselves, but of them.

This is great news, all other problems must have been solved!

[-] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 month ago

I unironically had the same thought when I was about 7, seeing "pyramid shaped teabags" advertised on TV. I thought we must have solved literally every other problem on Earth if we have enough manpower to dedicate to something so trivial.

I want to recapture that feeling.

Kind of, but I also think "teabag scientists" are right to concentrate on "teabag science". Not sure I want them looking at "data security in the post-surveillance era" or "feeding an increasing population during a crop-destroying climate crisis".

Maybe try a ~~round~~ spherical teabag next, lads?

[Edit] I meant spherical :(

[-] tazeycrazy@feddit.uk 2 points 1 month ago

Already have the round teabag. It's sometimes called the Irish teabag.

[-] fakeman_pretendname@feddit.uk 3 points 1 month ago

Actually, I meant spherical. We already have round (flat) teabags. I am a fool.
