The Department for Education has confirmed that schools in England will be required to serve a portion of pulses within or alongside every main menu option at least once each week, following the first rewrite of the School Food Standards in more than a decade. The department published its consultation response this month and intends to lay regulations in October 2026, with the revised standards applying from September 2027 subject to parliamentary approval.
