Almost took an interest in learning Gregg but then I found Elian Script and while it's not a shorthand, I liked it more so come back to it more often.
A newspaper in a niche script is kind of a funny idea though, writing something meant to be broadly informative in a format only the few can understand.
I'll admit, it does play with the word broad quite a bit.
A network broadcast is meant to be received by all the computers on a LAN, but the message is still limited in scope. There were Gregg books, magazines, and cartoons at one time. Then it all just vanished.
I know this niche script that's over 100 years old. Several other people know it too, but we don't talk to each other in it. We don't pass correspondence. We don't check on each other, or tell each other about our lives. We're completely cut off, in a world more connected than ever.
The ways in which we are 'more connected' are only quantitative, not qualitative. If you have 1000 people on your Facebook 'friends' list, are you 'more connected' than the person who only talks to two people, but one of them is their partner/spouse and the other is someone who they'd trust to move a corpse?
Though, what you are talking about there is community. It can be formed around almost anything. Why not a love for a niche writing system? There is an elianscript comm here on Lemmy. Why not one for Gregg?
On the practical side, is there a good way to digitally transmit Gregg? It was meant to be handwritten, which all the lowest-common-denominator technologies that we use most often can have some trouble with.
Not me but my mum was an expert at it. She’d use it to write her shopping lists or jot down the questions in a pub quiz.
I use it for my own shopping lists.
I learned shorthand to take notes during college. A newspaper is not generally where people expect to find it though. Do you just like how it looks?
I think it has the potential to build a modern subculture, facilitating hobby discussions, news, and build personal interactions.
How did you learn it? I've always wanted to learn, but never really knew how to get into it.
