A UN report has concluded that recent US airstrikes on vessels allegedly trafficking drugs breached international law and could constitute crimes against humanity.

The report by Special Rapporteur Ben Saul said since September last year there had been at least 68 US strikes in the Caribbean and Pacific, outside US territorial waters, which killed more than 220 people.

Saul said that even if targets could be identified as members of designated terrorist groups, they had not staged an armed attack on the US which would trigger a right to self-defence under international law.

The report comes two days after the US military said it killed four people in a strike on a vessel in the Caribbean.

shrug Idk, maybe. We'll take a vote to form a committee to discuss starting an investigation. Just hope nobody on the UN Security Council vetos it.

I am sure the people on the committee will be sanctioned by the US if they present any substantial evidence.

Assuming they aren't placed there by the US, or one of its close allies, to write a report that absolves them.

Although, I'll concede, one of the turns of the Trump Era has been a State Department that's no longer invested in covering its own ass at the UN. The Reagan/Clinton Era of sending some dweeb to the UN to say "No You!" at international counterparts is behind us. The Era of John Bolton types saying "Aktuly, it's incredibly based to bomb civilians and we should be going even harder" is in full swing.

They don't even know who's on the boats its ai giving them assessments and telling them what to attack. If anything there's one guy that reads a ai summary and hits the big red button.

They hadn't integrated AI into their decision tree in order to strike. This is entirely the fault of humans. AI don't give assessments in that field. AI may give identification on these assets, (It's 3x adult males) but the person monitoring that AI is the one who makes assessments. I know this was planned but it wasn't integrated when I was in the know.

All a LLM would be able to do is identify what type of boat there is and a guess on how many people there were. Not who those people are. At least not for people who are unimportant as these people were to grand scheme of operations. It may be able to identify a high value individual (HVI) but that sort of person would never be a drug runner

The assessor would keep a more reliable tally of people. People much higher up the chain would be the ones to actually call for the strike though.

The US military was trying to integrate AI into their workflow but in ways that actually make sense. The people who are actually responsible for the integration of things into combat systems are really freaking smart. (It's not the same as that 36-year-old Master Sergeant who thinks that the best part about AI is making music that doesn't know the meaning of structure) The military also has an institutional conservatism where they don't want to make changes that are really stupid so they have to plan out everything. That's one of the many reasons why it costs so much to procure anything.
