I can't really say right now who I would label the leader of the free world. But I can think of at least two countries that would not even come close to making that list. The United States and China.
I don't think there is a clear leader of the free world. It's maybe more like an alliance of some EU countries and Canada.
I would even entertain the thought that a truly free world should not have a leader. Or at least be led by a consensus.
That was the original sense that was meant by the phrase, accurate or not.
Considering we used to have a massive amount of soft power it was certainly more accurate at one point.

"The Leader of the Free World" is such a stupid catchphrase. The Free World doesn't have a single leader. Nor can it have.
Think less the "ruler" sense of the word leader, and more the "one who sets the tone that others choose to follow" sense.
Accuracy aside, it was never meant as "commander of the free world", but more like "role model".
