I found some old cds and dvds. Some are software or games and it asks me for a product key or whatever that was in the back of the original box (I do not have the original box) Idk if this is the right community but is there any way to skip it or crack it or something?

I mean the stuff is probably archived somewhere online and possibly already ready to just download or run but that's no fun and I am also curious.

The terms you are looking for are “keygen” and “crack”.

n00bs used "nocd".

I loved when the keygens had MIDI prog/metal. Back then, that reminded me of cracktros on C64 games.

I haven't seen a .tk domain in so long.

Thanks! It played BAttERY Face Factory The Sims Edition NoCD, immediately recognized as Commando theme by Rob Hubbard on C64.

That's brilliant. The age of empires tune is as tacky as I remembered

If you like a challenge you could try to write your own crack. At some point in the installer's code there must be a condition that goes "If entered serial is correct, jump to installation, otherwise jump to error message.". On x86 machines a "jump if" is represented by the byte 0x74, whereas "jump if not" is 0x75. In the most simple scenario all you need to do is find the exact byte representing that jump and replace it with its opposite. The installer will then let you proceed if you enter any invalid serial.

At minimum you'd need a disassembler (ideally one that lets you run the installer in some kind of debug mode), and a hex editor. Be warned that my knowledge was very limited back then and has likely deteriorated even more since. Also it can quickly get much more complicated if the installer comes with any form of tamper protection or obfuscation.

serials.ws was the site I used way back in the day. Might be on archive.org.

I forgot about that site! It was the shit!

this is why you write the key on a sharpie on the disc

[-] frongt@lemmy.zip 11 points 5 days ago
  1. write key on disc
  2. put disc in drive
  3. ???
  4. profit?
[-] f4f4f4f4f4f4f4f4@sopuli.xyz 6 points 5 days ago

Most installers wouldn't care if the disc got temporarily ejected but you risked AutoRun opening another instance of the installer, bringing your PC to its knees. XD

Don't use sharp things on CDs!

[-] ryannathans@aussie.zone 7 points 5 days ago

Instructions unclear, what do I use to write the key on a sharpie?

[-] altphoto@lemmy.today 7 points 5 days ago

Someone said to burn the CD, now it won't even fit I the player. It's all warped and crispy.

[-] aramis87@fedia.io 3 points 5 days ago

And if OP decides to keep the discs and is smart, that's exactly what s/he'll do now.

25 years ago when I was a teenager I had a terrible problem with CD cases getting broken and thrown away. I would have those CD stack cases filled with loose random CDs and no keys. I believe it is still around but GameCopyWorld (just google it) is how I was forced to install.

Honestly, I should have just taped paper on the CD top with the keys, but I was a kid and didn't think very far down the line.

One day, in the name of organizing, my mom put all of our game CDs into a a compact container and threw the original boxes away.

Yeah that was a sad day…

[-] LillyPip@lemmy.ca 12 points 5 days ago

Back in the day, every disc or software needed its own key, or you’d search for a crack that infected your computer with malware.

There’s no universal way to bypass keys. Try the wayback machine, perhaps, if you’re really into self-flagellation.

[-] BurgerBaron@quokk.au 5 points 4 days ago

GameCopyWorld is very web 1.0 but it's still around if you need No CD cracks.

Serial keys...hmmm. That's a good question. serials.ws doesn't exist anymore.

I guess these days you'd look up a game on archive.org and look for a text file bundled into the release that has a key or two.

Fuck. That actually annoys me. We should have a serial / keygen archival website.

[-] UninterestingVoid@reddthat.com 2 points 4 days ago

I totally just found keys randomly in a websearch lol. that was only for one game I will probs check the others soon enough.

[-] cheeseburger@lemmy.ca 5 points 5 days ago

Just hop on astalavista.box.sk and search!

[-] UninterestingVoid@reddthat.com 4 points 5 days ago

Now that redirects to a site of something related to cars apparently.

[-] cheeseburger@lemmy.ca 7 points 5 days ago

Ah, sorry about that, my comment was tongue-in-cheek, as that's what peeps used to do in the 90s.
