This is a weird new habit. It’s like they’ve taken the Video Game of the Year edition concept. Do those even exist anymore?
Oh, better believe they'll release GTA whatever as a GOTY edition two weeks after they sell out of the collectors edition. No disk though, you'll probably just get a special flair to dangle from your crotch.
GotY editions are usually bundles with DLC nowadays.
So first things first, bullshit.
Second, when Endgame first released it was back in theaters a few months later with some extra scenes including an unfinished Hulk scene. Spider-Man No Way Home also had a theatrical release called "The More Fun Stuff" version that came out a few months later.
So this isn't exactly new, but still stupid. I know going way back the second Sam Raimi Spider-Man had a special DVD release know as "Spider-Man 2.1", but theater versus DVD is a huge difference.
"Spider Man: Brand New Extra Day: Special Edition Directors Cut: More Money Please Money Me More Now"
Is this the next step? Instead of rebooting a franchise once a decade, they just rerelease the ones people like with 3 more min of footage?
Or are we not doing directors cuts anymore?
Just worked for Avengers Endgame. I think it just saw another $80 million this past weekend and all that changed was the end credits scene I think. Although we know people are going because they love the movie and Doomsday is about to drop. After seeing how big this was I absolutely believe what you said is definitely the next step.

They added a lot more than a 6 minutes of footage.
Right, like if it was an actual "director's cut/special edition" there'd be deleted scenes put back in, maybe an alternate take or two somewhere, and just generally more of the movie.
Not this bullshit "we're tacking on a post-credits scene that's gonna be way out of place and look like it was shot this past weekend."

On the other hand, what reason is there for time-limited theatrical releases at all these days? Once a movie is on on-demand streaming, why not let cinemas play whatever they want whenever they want?
Its what loads of cinemas do, Miss Congeniality is on near me - that is no rerelease
