Winds are stronger at higher altitudes, allowing for twice as much energy to be produced.

I always found it stupid that countries did the "world's tallest [x building]". Most of the time it has no practical relevance apart from the engineering achievement. This time it's different.

Please, someone, tell all the Saudis, Putins, Kims, Trumps and the like. I'd love to see a race to build the highest wind turbine 😄

If Trump built one, he'd build a coal power plant next to it and use its electricity to make the wind turbine turn against the wind, just to show his hatred for renewables.

Don't give them ideas...

[-] fullsquare@awful.systems 8 points 1 week ago

That's still mostly engineering achievement, what you need is scale (if this approach of building these extra tall turbines works)

[-] FleetingTit@feddit.org 7 points 1 week ago

That's the plan. This was basically a proof-of-concept and will probably undergo a couple of months of testing and benchmarking. Once that is done they will probably start requesting building permits.

Makes a good headline though 😉

From world’s biggest coal excavator to biggest wind turbine! 💪

Right wing nutjobs can cry and roll on the floor all they want but you can‘t stop this progress.

Oh great, they made wind turbines ugly again. Why? Why make it look like a power line tower?

I sincerely hope they go for designs that aren't so sinfully ugly.

[-] chris@l.roofo.cc 16 points 1 week ago

The design is purely practical. Because it is so high it has to deal with more wind and it's own weight. Because it is not solid wind can pass through better and it's not as heavy.

One of the arguments against wine turbines was that they were ugly. Somehow those white lily flower looking wind turbines looked ugly to some people.

Now, this one does look ugly. Just make it pretty, it'll make things easier to sell to the nay sayers and the fence sitters.

As someone who comes from an area, that houses some of the biggest offshore wind farms in Europe I can only laugh about people complaining about how ugly wind turbines are. Its just a matter of getting used to it. Here when you drive the right roads at night you can see hundreds of turbines blinking simultaneously. Luckily they realised, that its kind of not necessary for the turbines to blink the whole night, so newer turbines don't blink continuously.

[-] DrunkenPirate@feddit.org 2 points 1 week ago

This ugly tall wind turbine is build between existing ugly small wind turbines. There’s no need to make it pretty.

People are used to the ugly small ones already.

Besides this, it’s built at an old open-pit lignite mining. If you ever have seen such a spot - which I doubt - you will be happy to see this wind turbine. It looks much better than the pit.

[-] Madagaskar_sky@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

How dare you! The small wind turbines look cute! They are NOT ugly!

Hah, you must not have dealt with NIMBYs. They will say better to just have an empty pit rather than an ugly wind turbine that looks like a horror show character.

[-] flops@feddit.org 2 points 1 week ago

As someone who lived close to an active open lignite pit, I'm happy to live near wind turbines now.

They may or may not be ugly, you get used to them.

What I care for more is the fact that I don't have lung problems and cough half the year.

[-] Madagaskar_sky@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

What if you didn't have to get used to them?

[-] flops@feddit.org 3 points 1 week ago

Yeah but where do you want to get your electricity from? Wind&Solar is the only option without massive climate and environmental pollution, dependence on autocrat countries and international shipping, nuclear waste and danger of critical sabotage and possible terrorist attacks.

Getting used to wind turbines is kinda worth the upside of having clean, reliable, cheap and independent energy.

[-] A_A@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

When the Eiffel Tower was built, people said it was ugly, but now it is seen as a work of art ... so : we'll discuss that in 300 years and you will then tell me that it is beautiful.
