The University of Alabama at Birmingham is rolling over to Trump and his acolytes in the state, rather than stand up for editorial independence.

The Alabama legislature passed a bill in late March requiring all state and local entities to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” in line with one of the many executive orders Trump signed on his first day in office. The legislation does not set forth penalties for noncompliance, but its sponsor, state Rep. David Standridge, called it “an opportunity to make a patriotic statement” on the House floor in January. Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, a Trump ally, signed the bill into law.

Birmingham public radio station WBHM told its listeners in a letter from Will Dahlberg, the station’s executive director and general manager, that due to the law, which took effect October 1, the University of Alabama at Birmingham is forcing it to use the legislature’s preferred language in its reporting.

The legislation does not set forth penalties for noncompliance

Doesn't sound like it's a real law, then, does it?

the law also said you don't have to if there's any financial reason not or of it's untenible or something along those lines.

So small they can fit in your pocket and come along with you everywhere you go 🤗

Now I want to create a Tamagochi, but with Trump, and he will die if he doesn't get the attention he so desperately needs. I would call it the pocket dictator.

Oh, and he will hatch out of a pile of shit. And when he dies, he will turn into a new one. So you can have another go.

I guess I'm forced to talk shit on the university of Alabama at Birmingham.

Been there before. All of them are inbred and have no spine. Nobody cares about them and their Mom's all have severe hemorrhoids from using entire hardcover books to wipe their asses.

I hope South America references this in an episode.

If the only war he wins is the ability to call a body of water whatever he wants to the few people who care, I'd say that's a win for the rest of us.

The scorched earth policy on everything else tho...

They should engage in malicious compliance. Everything with a name is called "America."

America Street America Blvd America Ct Every building they reference on campus is America Building, America Hall, etc. Reporters have their first and last names randomly changed to America They are the University of America at Birmingham, home of the fighting Americans.

Do it so much that all names become patriotically meaningless

If someone tries to force me to call it gulf of America I'm putting asbestos into their cars air conditioner filter. Have fun with mesothelioma pissrag.

[-] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 20 hours ago

Yeah. That risk of maybe killing them in 20 years if they breath in enough of it is just terrifying. "Woo... the possibility of a risk is just going to get 'em."

Asbestos doesn't work that way.

Oh I don't want to kill them, I want to cripple them.

Also if I'm being completely honest I say enough violent shit that I'm basically addlibing it at this point, most of them hit but yeah that's most not all. Also I knew a man who died to mesothelioma shits horrific, would definitely wish it apon my enemies it's just a shame a good man died to it.

Okay. Now what are they doing to improve education, healthcare, and infrastructure? Alabama ranks near the lowest of all 50 states in all 3 metrics

What are they doing to reduce poverty, crime, and corruption?

Gulf of America is a pointless distraction to keep us from discussing the real issues that they aren't fixing

[-] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 20 hours ago

Forced? Were they really?
