I can barely even use matrix. They need figure out their UI and UX before it can become a serious option.

I would recommend Sable, as it's very Discord-like. I'm sure others have experienced good clients with features perhaps more specific to an anime community.
Not sure why you're getting downvoted, but I'd agree Sable's good for newcomers and decently functional enough.

Anyway, ani.social's chatroom is on Matrix, so I don't think we need to worry (not that I encourage using it for sharing pirated content - that's probably a bad idea)

Not sure what you mean by overseas, but at least in the US this season most of the best anime seems to be on Netflix (though Crunchyroll does have Apothecary Diaries).
