More regional rail would be great but I'd rather just fly to the west coast.

Maybe its just my autism, but sickeningly so yes, I'd kill for the oppritunity to see north america by train
You can do this now. Amtrak has several routes that go all the way out west.
I really need to, but its pretty expensive for long range travel and I'm poor tbh.
