dude, one is like 32GB and the other is 1TB, bigger number wins, take 32

[-] tigerjerusalem@lemmy.world 68 points 1 day ago

I know it's a joke but this triggered something primal inside me that I cannot quite understand yet, and it's not a fart.

Yeah, OP must be some sort of moran to question this.

Windows was eating a lot of ram on my laptop even on idle, so if was planning to upgrade my ram from 16 to 32 gb, then I checked the prices and made the tactical decision to install Linux instead

[-] criticon@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 day ago

Seriously my 7 year old i3 w 12gb of RAM laptop running mint feels more smooth than my new work laptop with 64gb of RAM running windows 11 (and a bunch of corporate clutter)

[-] BackgrndNoize@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

64 gigs on a windows work laptop what a waste, if not Linux if they at least went with a MacBook that would have been such a better use of it

[-] mewtiful@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 day ago

It's also quite nice that Linux/etc let you choose what kinds of things you want it to do in low memory situations. I.e. I was getting some OOM process kills mostly because of a modded minecraft server running, and increasing the zswap max pool percentage to 50, changing the zswap compressor to I think zstd, and enlargening my physical swap partition eliminated them.

[-] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

zswap

As an aside, I just read that zswap is getting a pretty big performance increase: https://www.phoronix.com/news/Linux-Better-Zswap-Performance

[-] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Kinda same. I couldn't get to 11 because of the lack of a TPM. Upgrading is expensive. Linux is not.

[-] BackgrndNoize@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Nice, Microsoft has become another tech cancer of a company, it’s good you didn’t upgrade to 11

[-] lka1988@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 17 hours ago

Microsoft has been a shit sandwich of a company for a long time now. They were fully into the "extend, embrace, extinguish" method since their inception.

Do you want to store things long term or short term?

[-] TrantaLocked@lemmy.zip 22 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I got a 1 TB SN850X for $90 a couple years ago for my game and page file drive. Also Patriot 2x8 5600 for like $80 in 2023. Very disappointing what has happened since then.

[-] officermike@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago

I'm a hoarder who never uninstalls Steam games even if I don't foresee playing them again. I bought an 8TB nvme drive last summer for $545. I questioned my life choices when I bought it, but now the same drive is $1750. I feel better about my purchase.

I built my PC in 2024. Okay specs - 7950X3D, 2x 48GB DDR5-6400, 4090, 1+4TB Samsung 990, all watercooled. About £4k total.

Today I could sell that PC for about 10-12k. RAM was originally £300, now it's £1800 IF you can buy it. The storage also cost me around £400, today, easily £1500.

Tf do you mean "okay specs"?!?

I built my PC in 2023, right between the covid GPU bullshit and the AI everything bullshit. 5800X3D, 7900XTX (MSRP!), 64GB DDR4-3600 (slimmed down to 32GB because XMP didn't play nice with 4 sticks, the other 32GB went to a server in my basement), and 500GB+2TB WD Black NVME SSDs.

I thought mine was beastly 😂

[-] fonix232@fedia.io 1 points 13 hours ago

TBF I was going all out 😂but yeah the fact that my build essentially tripled in price is insane.

[-] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

I was looking into upgrading storage and ended up opting to buy 20TB in HDDs for my NAS.

I have to shuffle Steam games around but at 10Gb, it goes pretty fast (and you can run most games directly off the NAS) and the array can survive if a drive fails (ZFS).

You need the extra hardware to run the NAS but HDDs are a significantly cheaper option and you don't need SSD speeds for most things.

[-] Eternal192@anarchist.nexus 15 points 1 day ago

That's not really a contest because i can't afford either of those at their current prices.

Acronyms, initialisms, abbreviations, contractions, and other phrases which expand to something larger, that I've seen in this thread:

Fewer Letters More Letters
AP WiFi Access Point
NAS Network-Attached Storage
SSD Solid State Drive mass storage
ZFS Solaris/Linux filesystem focusing on data integrity

4 acronyms in this thread; the most compressed thread commented on today has 6 acronyms.

he's sweating cuz he knows if he pushes either one he's gonna be eatin' plain ramen for a month and short on rent

[-] ChapulinColorado@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

You mean evicted, they were already late and short on rent from the GPU financed with buy now pay later a few months ago.

[-] lka1988@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 17 hours ago

Only $20/wk for 10 years!

I feel bad for anyone building now. I built my gaming setup + NAS and server PC and upgraded my Steam Deck in the past 2 to 3 years. Going to get as much milage out of these as I can till things settle down. I've changed all my Docker services to lower resource alternatives to keep things running on my existing ram.

Then in 5 years when things have only gotten worse and this is the new norm then I'll cry alongside everyone else. Or maybe China will get their fabs up and running and swoop in to undercut these bastards to save us all.

[-] DigDoug@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

The correct answer is "have bought them both 2 years ago".

[-] tal@lemmy.today 4 points 1 day ago

I wouldn't push either button in 2026 or 2027 if you can wait.

[-] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 4 points 1 day ago

memory is impossible dream

[-] Ep1cFac3pa1m@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Buy decent memory, and a cheaper SSD. Since the MoBo is backwards compatible you should be able to get a PCI-E 4.0 SSD that won’t cost as much as a 5.0, and when (if) prices finally come down you can upgrade to a better one. Since a DDR4 MoBo isn’t compatible with DDR5 RAM, you’re stuck with DDR4 until you upgrade the MoBo again.

[-] Caesium@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

yeah I wanted to get more space but I ultimately chose to just upgrade from 16 to 32 GB ram finally. I have a decent amount of storage already, I'm just a blooming data hoarder so I've had to fanagle files around
