No plan to move the infrastructure at this time.

I respect the wait and see approach.

You should follow Canadian law. You should follow rules of lemmy.ca and piefed.ca.

You can contact your MP and take up activism.

You can also protest legally.

You can also write things which are legal and happen to lead to other less traceable sources where God-knows-what happens.

If you choose to disobey the law, that's bad. If many choose to disobey the law, that's bad and maybe the government will be forced to change it.

There are lots of ways for us to follow the law. We all love Bill C-22 right? I think it's worth showing them how much we love it.

Edit: for real, email your MP right now, it takes 5 minutes. Use your own words, you don't need a template. Be courteous and professional when emailing an MP. If they aren't in support, you can make it clear in any follow up communications about how you feel. You can decimate somebody with kind but strong words, so keep that in mind. AT THE START OF YOUR EMAIL INCLUDE YOUR FULL NAME, AND FULL ADDRESS WITH POSTAL CODE. STATE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE A RESPONSE, OTHERWISE THEY CAN ESSENTIALLY IGNORE IT

Yes you're likely to get a staff member who gets these emails all day, but responding to them still takes some modicum of effort. Even if they're essentially discarded individually, if enough come in, they will at some point have a professional responsibility to mention it to their MP. Also, workplace gossip exists everywhere. You pay this person with a portion of your tax dollars with the purpose of representing your electoral district, don't forget that .

I think we should wait and see if France or Ireland head down this path as well. It's not like Canada's the first.

Maybe Quebec can opt out of the 5 eyes and this surveillance bill.

Maybe Taiwan, South Korea and Japan can be considered candidates since they’re closer to Vancouver.

Better write to your senators if you want lower latency and better privacy.

Regardless of where the infrastructure ends up, have you considered a .onion endpoint?

[-] floofloof@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I doubt it would make any legal difference as long as there's an identifiable Canadian nonprofit operating the sites. They can still be prosecuted if they don't obey the new law and retain the logs.

I suppose if the .onion sites were entirely independent and unconnected to the existing sites it might not be evident that they're run by the same nonprofit, but to do that untraceably is not straightforward.

Of course. I'm not suggesting they break the law.

I'd like to start the convention of also providing .onion addresses, because there's a good chance these stupid laws are going to become more and more common.

People are afraid of holding Mark Carney’s liberals accountable.

[-] cadekat@pawb.social 2 points 2 days ago

It's a much broader problem than just Canadian politics.

Same thing occurred with Donald Trump the extremist. He took over the GOP and desecrated their reputation. First-past-the-post lets them lurk behind one of 2 big parties.
